Support the Oregon Nursery Industry
The OAN is only as strong as its member interest and involvement. We understand that you have a busy life and there is only so much of you to go around. However, there are many ways that you can lend your support and voice to the industry that require various levels of commitment. Whether you have the time to be a chapter officer, a member of a committee or simply donate an auction item to ONPAC, there are many unique ways for you to get involved in the association. Some of the most common opportunities include:
Of course, if you are not already a member, membership is the best way to be involved in the industry. The association works hard to serve your interests and needs, whether it's having a voice in Salem or researching potential business service discounts. Membership dues are leveraged to run programs such as the OAN Nursery Guide, Digger magazine, earn support from federal, state and local governments and to create marketing campaigns for Oregon plant material.

The OAN has nine chapters throughout Oregon whose purpose is to extend the association's activities to various geographic areas or industry segments. We encourage new members to register for one or more chapters and attend meetings as often as possible. Most chapters meet monthly from October through June. Don't wait to be asked! People wanting to get involved in chapter leadership or sponsor a chapter meeting should contact their chapter president.
In order to truly have an impact on the industry, many people volunteer their time to the association. Volunteer opportunities range from joining a committee that interests you to lending a block of time to assisting the Farwest show or representing the OAN at a job fair or Ag Fest. Simply click here for information on the various committee opportunities or contact Beth Farmer.
Many OAN events, including local chapter meetings, offer your company industry exposure through sponsorships. Simply contact the chapter president for local exposure or review the following list of OAN events for sponsorship opportunities and contact Chris Sweet firstname.lastname@example.org.
Farwest Trade Show: One of the "crown jewels" of nursery trade shows in North America, the Farwest Trade Show is held each August at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, where it attracts about 14,000 registered attendees. www.farwestshow.com
Yard, Garden & Patio Show: Oregon's premier consumer gardening show, the Yard, Garden & Patio Show, is held each February at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. It's a three-day extravaganza of color and excitement that attracts between 25,000 and 30,000 gardening enthusiasts! www.ygpshow.com
Duffers' Classic Golf Tournament: Held each June, Duffers is a fundraiser for the Oregon Nurseries Political Action Committee (ONPAC). Many OAN members choose to do business with industry supporters, and this tournament offers many sponsorship opportunities for interested businesses.
Annual Convention: Held in a relaxed environment, the Annual Convention provides excellent opportunities for members of Oregon's green industry to network, learn and applaud the contributions of others. There are quite a few sponsorship opportunities that can put your company name in front of the most active and supportive members of the OAN.
OAN Seminars at the NW AG Show: This is an educational program held at the headquarter hotel of the Northwest Agricultural Show, which takes place the end of January at the Expo Center in Portland. The OAN seminars focus on topics important to production and middle management employees. This is a good entry-level sponsorship opportunity.
Product or Service Donation
Perhaps your company can offer a great auction item such as a wine club membership or vacation rental to ONPAC, printing services to your local chapter or a food item to the Annual Convention greeter baskets. Donating product or services like this is a significant way to support the industry as it allows the OAN to either reduce its costs or raise money for important legislative representation. Please contact the OAN at email@example.com or 503-682-5089 for more information.
The OAN has other programs that require voluntary contributions to maintain the good work it is doing. They are listed below:
Oregon Nurseries' Political Action Committee: ONPAC is the political action arm of the Oregon nursery and greenhouse industry. It has the responsibility of raising and distributing funds to assist in the election and support of legislative candidates supportive of issues of importance to nursery/greenhouse industry members. The committee works closely with the OAN Government Relations Committee in reviewing the political and legislative issues.

Oregon Nurseries Foundation: The OAN has established the Oregon Nurseries Foundation to manage funds contributed by OAN members for the purpose of awarding scholarships to deserving students preparing for a career in ornamental horticulture and related fields. The ONF is a separate nonprofit foundation under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Foundation is governed by a five-member Board of Trustees who are members of the OAN.

Shade Tree Disease Research: Each year the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) in cooperation with the OAN and other interested individuals award financial grants to support research that benefits the Oregon nursery industry. These grants are funded by the nursery industry itself through the Nursery Research Assessment Fee collected by the ODA. The OAN administers a fund set up to provide grants for shade tree disease research. The Shade Tree Disease Fund monies come entirely from individual and corporate donations; 100% of the money contributed goes to support qualifying research projects.
