Publications Manager

The Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) is a non-profit trade association that represents approximately 800 nursery stock producers, retailers, landscapers and related companies serving the nursery and greenhouse industry. The OAN is the main voice for Oregon's nursery and greenhouse growers, re-sellers, transporters, retailers and suppliers.

Summary: The Publications Manager serves as a member of the Publications and Communications team and performs a variety of duties related to that department and the association as a whole. This person reports directly to the Director of Publications and Communications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as staff designer and art director for Digger magazine, a trade publication serving the horticulture industry. Lay out placement of ads and editorial content, working within the established design of Digger . Perform pre-press tasks, including pre-flighting, to make sure the magazine and all contents (including advertisements and photographs) meet technical specifications for press. Transmit the completed issue to press. Prepare completed issue for web posting to DiggerMagazine.com via the WordPress platform, including social media posts promoting each article.
  • Serve as a member of the editing team to help prepare submitted articles for print in Digger magazine, using track changes in Microsoft Word. Help ensure that all articles meet the magazine's established standards for grammar, style and voice.
  • Proofread Digger and other publications and communications projects during each step of the production process, helping ensure that they meet standards for grammar, style, punctuation and spelling. Learn AP Style and other guidelines as practiced by the OAN publications team, and apply them to these projects. Make corrections to draft versions of projects. Follow established procedures for tracking projects throughout the review process.
  • Assist with the writing and editing of headlines, subheads and cutlines for Digger.
  • Take the lead role in assembling and writing (or rewriting) items for the Member Update electronic newsletter. Incorporate items and other information provided by association members and others on the staff, as directed by supervisor.
  • Design print and electronic advertisements for publication in Digger and other association media channels, including ads for clients as well as house ads for the association.
  • Write a variety of story assignments for Digger magazine and the OAN website as needed. These may include news briefs, features, department items, and the calendar, among others. Contact sources, interact with stakeholders, and do research as necessary to complete these assignments.
  • Design and create a variety of additional print materials in support of OAN goals and programs. Communicate with internal clients (e.g., members of OAN staff or leadership) to ensure their ideas are accurately translated to the final product and completed on time.
  • Participate in the regularly scheduled review of OAN website content to make certain it remains accurate, professionally written and useful for members. Assist other team members in the updating of this content as needed.
  • Serve as photographer and videographer for Digger and other projects as needed. Edit and produce photos, footage and videos so that final product meets quality standards.
  • Create blog and social media items for the OAN, the OAN Nursery Guide, and Digger , as assigned. Post items to Facebook, Twitter, blogs, YouTube, the web and other channels, as needed. Maintain, follow and help create an editorial calendar of blog and social media postings.
  • Participate in staffing and production of OAN activities, events and work parties as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including phone duty and event staffing.

Skills required: Successful candidates will have excellent computer and office skills, be able to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and work independently or cooperatively with other staff as needed. Outstanding communication and organizational skills are a must. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively represent our association are crucial.

A minimum of three years of previous experience working in a related field is required. This position involves working with digital and written communications. Working knowledge of software applications is expected, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud software (Acrobat, Photoshop and InDesign; Illustrator a plus). Candidates will be asked to provide examples, or clippings, demonstrating skill and proficiency.

Status: Full-time, salaried position with standard benefits. The standard workweek is 40 hours but there may be some variance for special events or projects.
