A Strong Voice
OAN Government Relations program
Advocacy, like business, is personal as well as strategic. By building bipartisan relationships, the OAN sets the stage for its members to impact public policy. When critical issues arise, OAN's government relations team is your defense system against adverse regulation. But we are more than just reactive. Our daily efforts to advance your interests, and those of the entire industry, are based on shared principles, with a laser focus on outcomes. There are two main objectives:
Promote a positive business climate: growing, shipping and selling product needs to have positive business climate to compete on a state, national and international level
Protection from burdensome laws: regulation, taxation and bad laws can all hurt a nursery and greenhouse operation quickly. OAN serves as a sentry against burdensome laws that impact you and your operation.
Working at all levels
The OAN government relations team works at the local, state and federal levels to advance the industry:
Local: OAN educates officials on pollinator protection, ensuring your ability to do business continues without unproductive restrictions. And when nursery products and imported goods were being held up by issues with the western ports, the OAN worked with local, state and federal partners to get a solution.
State: Elected and agency officials depend on OAN for accurate information on the nursery industry and the challenges it faces. We have the uniqu ability to engage decision makers in every corner of the state (urban or rural). We find solutions on labor, land use and water issues, while supporting funding for research, education and statewide extension services.
Federal: The OAN has a proven track record as a national leader. We engage Oregon's members of Congress on issues such as federal immigration reform and the Affordable Care Act. We work with USDA officials to address pest and disease issues. And we collaborate with AmericanHort to address issues affecting nurseries nationally.
OAN has delivered for you
The OAN draws its strength and direction from member involvement. That in turn allows our professional staff, with decades of experience, to work every day on your behalf.
Results over partisanship: OAN members have a variety of political opinions and the Government Relations Committee is a place where policies are discussed and solutions are created. OAN is an effective advocate and gets legislation passed on your behalf.
Issue oriented: The advocacy effort by the association focuses on hitting issues that affect your pocketbook: labor, water, environmental regulations, health care and pest and disease protection are a small segment of the issues the association and its members discuss.
Access to political leaders: The OAN attracts key political decision makers at the Government Relations Committee meetings. Face to face conversations help promote the nursery agenda. The OAN is your political voice. Members set the policy direction and the association talks to elected officials, agencies at the federal and state level and shapes issues with the press.
To learn more and get involved, consider joining the OAN Government Relations Committee. For details, contact
Jeff Stone at 503-682-5089 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
