Oregon State Treasurer Ted Wheeler was the guest speaker at the July 8 meeting of the OAN Government Relations Committee.
Wheeler touched on several topics of importance to the nursery industry, including his support for infrastructure development and the importance of protecting and developing Oregon’s water resources. He also mentioned the importance of higher education and the student loan debt issue to the economy.
According to Wheeler, student loan debt is prompting millennials to buy fewer homes. That is bad, he said, because typically, first-time homebuyers will account for two-thirds of housing starts. Such homebuilding activity generates business for the nursery industry through landscaping requirements.
The committee helps shape public policies that benefit OAN members and protect member interests with legislators and regulators in Salem and Washington, D.C. The next meeting will be in August at the Farwest Trade Show. Details will be forthcoming. All OAN members are welcome.
