On Monday, Feb. 2, Oregon's 78th Legislative Assembly convened its 2015 regular session. So far, lawmakers have introduced some 2,100 bills, with many more to come. In a typical session, around 3,500 bills are ultimately introduced, with perhaps 300 of those becoming laws.
The new legislature is expected to consider bills that address funding for natural resource agencies and OSU Extension, a minimum wage increase, a requirement that employers offer sick leave, a low carbon fuel and carbon tax, and a large transportation infrastructure bill.
On all of these issues, the OAN Government Relations Team will be a strong advocate for the nursery industry. In addition, the OAN will lead the way on water quality and supply efforts, and support land use legislation beneficial to growers. We will continue to fight attempts to have the state regulate immigration, which is properly a federal issue.
The OAN Government Relations team consists of executive director Jeff Stone, contract lobbyist Thorn Run Partners and legal counsel Jordan Ramis PC.
The OAN Government Relations Committee, chaired by Josh Zielinski of Alpha Nursery, meets seven times a year, often interacting directly with political leaders to help shape policy.
The OAN Member Update will keep members updated on important developments. For more information, please contact Jeff Stone at email@example.com.
