Legislative Changes Affecting Nursery Employers in
2008

FEELDS Program
The 2007 Legislature passed many Senate and House Bills that
affect agriculture employment practices. The Department of
Homeland Security and the Social Security mis-match issue is also
an area of concern for agricultural employers. This presentation
will bring you up-to-date on these issues and give you practical
tips for putting them into practice at your nursery.

Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency:
Opportunities for Nurseries
Stephanie Page, Oregon Department of Agriculture
This seminar will include an overview of potential renewable
energy projects on nurseries, including solar, wind, biomass
geothermal and small hydroelectric facilities. You will become
familiar with energy efficiency strategies that will reduce your
nursery’s energy use and expenses as well as financial
incentives that can help your bottom line. Lastly, listen to fellow
growers about their own experiences implementing these strategies.

Propagation Media and Its Components
Dr. Jim Owen, Oregon State University
This presentation will look at how different components affect
the physical and chemical properties of the media and how it
relates to rooting success in stem cutting propagation.
2:30 – 3:30 PM
Disease Prevention During Propagation**
Dr. Robert Linderman, Plant Health, LLC
Incidence and control of soilborne pathogens during propagation
of nursery plants from seed and cuttings will be discussed.
Dr. Linderman will use examples of infections introduced during
propagation that do not occur until later stages of production,
such as Fusarium, Cyclindrocladium, Pythium, P h y t o p h t h o ra
and Thielaviopsis root rots. He will also address methods for
preventing those diseases by sanitizing containers, propagation
media and plant propagules.
**This session qualifies for OR & WA pesticide recertification credit.
