THURSDAY, JANUARY 28
Morning Session - Expo Room D201
Registration: 9:00
9:30 - 11:40 AM
9:30 - 10:30 AM The Clock Makes the Poison: Daily Rhythms in Pesticide Response Dr. Louisa A. Hooven, Oregon State University Molecular clocks are found in organisms from insects to humans, and govern daily (circadian) rhythms in sleep and many other important physiological variables. The clock also regulates daily expression patterns of many genes, including those that break down toxins. In insects, these are the genes that break down pesticides. In this presentation, we will discuss how circadian rhythms affect insect's ability to break down pesticides.
Break: 10:30 – 10:40 AM
10:40 – 11:40 AM Good Guys at Work in Nurseries Dr. Jana Lee, USDA ARS Horticultural Crops Research Lab Predators and parasitoids can potentially control damaging pests thereby reducing insecticide inputs. What makes these good guys work? Like all living creatures, certain conditions like supplemental food and shelter can help them thrive. Providing odor cues may enhance their effectiveness. This presentation will discuss common biological control strategies in nursery systems, as well as potential strategies under research.
Afternoon Session
Registration: 12:30
1:00 – 3:00 PM Lean management: Increasing customer value through the “least waste way” Lean is a transforming system that focuses resources and energy on producing value and eliminating waste. All types of organizations can benefit from “thinking Lean,” and green industry companies are reporting process improvements in the range of 20 and 30 percent after applying Lean systems in production operations. They’re saving money and making better use of resources. This session gives an overview of Lean concepts and ponders ways nurseries can deliver more customer value and improve profits by eliminating waste.
Cancellation Policy: All cancellations received in writing by Jan. 11 will receive a full refund. Cancellations received by Jan. 18 will receive 50%. No refunds given after Jan. 18.
