Time to register for October first aid and CPR training classes

Time is running out to register for the first aid and CPR training classes offered by the OAN Safety Committee, through its partnership with SAIF. These classes are available to OAN members exclusively, at a reduced price. The training provides certification for two years.

Classes begin October 4 and are offered at five convenient locations — your choice of Boring, Eugene, Hillsboro, Salem or Wilsonville. Each class is taught either in English or in Spanish; check the schedule for details. The cost is $32 per person for those renewing their certification, or $42 per person for first-time attendees and those whose card has expired. All seats are first come, first served. Register early for best times and availability.

Packwood to visit OAN Government Relations Committee

Retired U.S. Senator Bob Packwood will be the very special guest of the OAN Government Relations Committee the next time it meets, starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the OAN offices, 29751 S.W. Town Center Loop West, Wilsonville, Ore. Packwood served as one of Oregon's two U.S. senators for more than 34 years, from 1969 to 1995, including two stints as chairman of the powerful Senate Committee on Finance. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday. This meeting will be an opportunity to hear about past issues as well as Packwood's analysis of the current state of affairs. All members are invited to attend. For more information, email Jeff Stone at jstone@oan.org.

Homebuilding activity improves in August

In what is surely good news for wholesale nurseries and landscapers, CNN/Money reported that new housing starts in the month of August were up 29 percent from a year ago. New housing starts, consisting of both single family and multifamily, have reached an annualized level of about 750,000 housing units. This is far below the peak of about 2 million housing units, which was attained in 2005. However, it's still an improvement over the housing slump of the past several years, when a glut of foreclosures and unsold new homes flooded the market. For more information, read the post at Daily Digger.

Make a difference — vote in the 2012 general election

Are you registered to vote? In the state of Oregon, Tuesday, October 16 is the last day to register in time for the Nov. 6, 2012 general election. There are many ways to register, but perhaps the easiest way is to do it online at www.oregonvotes.org. Ballots will be mailed beginning on Friday, Oct. 19 and must be returned by 8 p.m. on Election Day. This means that your ballot must be in election officials' hands by the deadline. Postmarks don't count.

As a service to members, the Oregon Nurseries' Political Action Committee has reviewed and interviewed many of the candidates for state legislative office. This nonpartisan process has resulted in the endorsement of several candidates, from both parties, who have demonstrated their willingness to listen to the needs and concerns of the nursery industry. You can see the list of endorsements here.

That will be followed by a workshop on reducing the risk of new disease introductions, which will be offered in English on Oct. 18 and Spanish on Oct. 25. Incentive offered for thermal greenhouse curtains

Ulrike Mengelberg at the Energy Trust of Oregon dropped us a note to let us know they're offering an incentive for growers who install energy-saving thermal curtains in their greenhouses. Qualifying growers can receive 9 cents per square foot of heated greenhouse (or square feet of curtain, but the former number in most cases will be higher). The curtain must be installed above the heated space, and it must be drawn closed automatically every night. Other terms and conditions also apply. [Read more]

In Memoriam

In Memoriam - Bob Ticknor

A memorial service for longtime Oregon State University extension agent Bob Ticknor will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, S.E. 28th Ave. and Woodstock Blvd., Portland. He passed away September 24, 2012.

Mr. Ticknor spent more than three decades working for the OSU extension service before retiring in the mid-1990s. He performed research on rhododendron and holly plants, among many others, as well as growing media and herbicides. He also played a key role on the Ornamentals Northwest seminars, which were a predecessor to the Farwest Show Seminars. He was inducted into the Oregon Nurseries' Hall of Fame in 1996.
