In Memoriam

Mr. Denney was born in 1921 in Iowa and graduated from Mt. Ayr High School. He enrolled at Iowa State University, but interrupted his education to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1942–1946. Upon his discharge he completed his degree, then married Maxine Zihlman in 1948. They operated an orchard in Nashua, Iowa for 10 years. Mr. Denney then served as vice president of Sherman's Nurseries in Charles City for five years before becoming head of commercial sales for Stark Nursery in 1966. He retired from that job in 1985. During his nursery career, Mr. Denney was active in the American Association of Nurserymen, and chaired the National Horticultural Standards Committee from 1979–1987.

In 1980, Mr. Denney and his son, Jon Denney, purchased Portland Nursery. The senior Denney moved to Portland in 1992 to be near his son and the nursery operation.

Mr. Denney was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine, and his sister, Bernice Webster. He married Syvia Moore of Portland following Maxine's death, and she survives. Other survivors include children Marjorie Hunt and her husband Doug; Martha Denney and her husband Lloyd Walker; Jon Denney and his wife Carol Finney; Jeanne Denney and her husband Nick Altebrando; and seven grandchildren. Also surviving are Sylvia's children Denise Aldridge and husband Bill; Stephanie More; Robert More and his wife Jenn; and their families. A full obituary may be viewed here.
