OAN office honors Thanksgiving holiday

As we celebrate the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, let all of us be thankful for the blessings of friendship, family, prosperity and good health. The OAN offices will be closed beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday and continuing all day Thursday and Friday, so that employees may spend the Thanksgiving holiday with their families. The OAN will be back, open and ready to serve you from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays, beginning Monday, Nov. 26.

Canada imposes regulation on bamboo stakes

According to Gary McAninch at the Oregon Department of Agriculture, Canadian regulatory officials are now requiring bamboo stakes and poles to be certified free of pests prior to entering Canada. This includes bamboo stakes and poles used as plant supports in nursery stock. To meet certification requirements, the bamboo must have been fumigated prior to or during entry into the United States. The ODA is required to verify the treatment on the phytosanitary certificate that accompanies the nursery stock shipment to Canada. The ODA will need a copy of a treatment certificate from your bamboo supplier in order to verify the treatment and issue the phytosanitary certificate. Contact your ODA inspector at 503-986-4644 for certification details.

Woodburn Nursery serves as example of efficiency

Tom Fessler and Woodburn Nursery & Azaleas were featured recently in an article in the Capital Press for their longtime efforts to reduce energy costs for heating and cooling. They have made more efficient use of natural gas and electricity through capital improvements, including better greenhouse plastics, computerized controllers and advanced venting systems. You can read the complete article here.

OAN Safety Tip: Move landscaping equipment safely

When there's a need to move a tractor, lawnmower or piece of landscaping equipment a long distance, the safest method is to haul it via trailer or flatbed truck. The following tips, offered in English (PDF) and Spanish (PDF), will help avoid accidents. These tips are courtesy of Ohio State University Extension Service, SAIF, and the OAN Safety and Insurance Committee.
