Oregon's "Young Guns" highlighted in Digger magazine

A new generation of young leaders is making a mark on Oregon's nursery industry. Digger magazine is highlighting seven of these "young guns" in the December issue, which arrives this week in mailboxes. Heading the group is recently-sworn-in OAN President Carson Lord of Tree Frog Nursery. Others include Mark Bigej of Al's Garden Centers, Eric Bizon of Bizon Nursery, John Lewis of JLPN Inc., Brent Markus of Rare Tree Nursery, Stacy Pohlschneider-Bunke of French Prairie Gardens & Nursery, and Bradley Weeks of Weeks Berry Nursery. The article (PDF) includes thoughts from all of them on where the industry is headed. A follow-up article will run in July 2013, featuring six more "young guns."

Phone outage disrupts business at offices

OAN employees came to work Monday to discover that the office phone system was down. If you attempted to telephone us on Monday or Tuesday, we apologize for the inconvenience. Technicians are working feverishly to fix the problem. If the system ever goes down in the future, you can always reach any department by sending an email to info@oan.org, where it will be routed to the most appropriate recipient. You can also look up individual staff members on our staff contacts page.

OAN hires new director of finance and administration

Sherry Markwood has been hired as the OAN's new director of finance and administration. She started her new job on Monday. "Sherry has an impressive background in financial management, HR, IT, databases and general administration," OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone said. "She has management experience as well as a roll-up-the-sleeves approach to getting things done. She'll be a great addition our team." Sherry looks forward to getting to know OAN members and can be reached at smarkwood@oan.org.

OAN Safety Tip: Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning

The use of gas-powered and small-engine tools and machines in sheltered areas is risky business. Such tools can quickly generate hazardous or fatal levels of carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas. Even in areas where a door or window is opened, the ventilation may not be adequate. Don't fall prey to a false sense of security. Avert a potential tragedy. Know and follow these tips — and share them with your employees. These tips are courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control, SAIF, and the OAN Safety and Insurance Committee.

Free hazard communication workshop offered December 5

The OAN Safety and Insurance Committee and Oregon OSHA will present a free training session on hazard communication on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Carlton Plants, 14301 S.E. Wallace Rd., Dayton, Ore. The class will be offered in Spanish from 8 a.m.–noon and in English from 1–5 p.m. Participants will learn how to apply proven and effective hazard communication techniques at your nursery. Senior instructor Tomas Schwabe of Oregon OSHA will cover:
     • Creating a hazards communication program
     • Conducting employee training
     • Completing a chemicals list
     • Labels and material safety data sheets
     • Recent changes to the Hazard Communication Rule – Globally Harmonized System (GHS)

Kitzhaber to meet with Government Relations Committee on Dec. 12

The meeting will be from 1–3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 in the Oregon State Capitol Building, Room S-243, 900 Court St., Salem, Ore. (Please note: the meeting is on a Wednesday, rather than the usual Tuesday meeting for this committee.)

Gov. Kitzhaber will talk about current state issues, as well as the nursery industry's important role in the state economy. Inexpensive parking is available nearby for 75 cents per hour; details are here. The meeting room has limited space available. If you plan to attend, RSVP to Jeff Stone at jstone@oan.org.
