Welcome to the Oregon Association of Nurseries weekly Member Update
January 30, 2013

Oregon Legislature is back in session on Monday

The Oregon Legislature will be back in session starting on Monday. The Oregon Association of Nurseries Government Relations Team is keeping close tabs on several issues that are important to member growers and the industry as a whole. "Our goal is to make a positive difference for growers on water supply policy and management, changes to Oregon Driver's License requirements, and appropriate funding for natural resource agencies," Executive Director Jeff Stone said. Click here for more information on these top three issues.

OAN is widely respected at the state and federal levels, by members of both major parties, because we take an issues-based approach. In 2012, our Government Relations Committee met with state legislative leaders, statewide officials including the state treasurer and governor, and former U.S. Sen. Bob Packwood. In 2013, we will meet with key members of the state agriculture committee, members of Congress, and other opinion leaders.

The new online Nursery Guide is here!

The OAN took an exciting step this week by going live with the new online Nursery Guide at www.NurseryGuide.com. Right now, we are in a soft launch stage of the site, with a hard launch to follow in March. The site uses a robust, Google-powered search tool. As a result of this, some search results may have a few hiccups until Google is finished indexing the site. We appreciate your patience and understanding.

The new online Nursery Guide will offer many new marketing opportunities for OAN growers and product/service providers. Later this spring, we will offer training in a variety of formats to help you manage your profile and take advantage of the opportunities the new site has to offer.

The relaunched NurseryGuide.com will be promoted in select trade publications starting next month, including Digger. Press releases and announcements on social media outlets will launch in March. Stay tuned to see how the new NurseryGuide.com will help position OAN members for success and create a compelling and useful tool for the industry. For more information, please refer to the January Digger article titled "Find Your Perfect Match." (PDF)

President, group of senators announce blueprints for immigration reform

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama rolled out his key principles for comprehensive immigration reform. This followed Sunday's announcement that a bipartisan group of eight leading Senators had agreed on their own, largely similar blueprint for reform (PDF).

"The nursery and greenhouse industry applauds the spirit of the effort underway by President Obama and the U.S. Senate," OAN President Carson Lord said. "It shows we have a real chance to resolve decades of inaction on immigration policy. It's not enough that our nation spends over $17 billion in border enforcement. Our leaders must commit to dealing with the millions of undocumented people and provide authorization to come out of the shadows. We must create a long overdue guest worker program and sensible policy for future flow of workers. Unless reform includes these components, all we are doing as a nation is hitting the reset button, and we will have the exact same problems in 25 years. The time is now to pass immigration reform." The meeting will be in Room C-123 at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Portland. The guest speakers will be a panel of House Democrats, including House Majority Leader Val Hoyle (D-Eugene), House Agriculture Committee Chairman Brad Witt (D-Clatskanie), and House Agriculture Committee members Rep. Caddy McKeown (D-Coos Bay) and Rep. Ben Unger (D-Hillsboro). All OAN members are welcome. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Dianne Wiencek at 503-682-5089 or Jeff Stone at jstone@oan.org. Oregonian editorial board supports driver's license bill

The Editorial Board of the state's largest newspaper, The Oregonian, has endorsed the OAN's position in favor of changing driver's license requirements so that agricultural workers can be licensed. It's a matter of safety. "The Legislature needs to recognize that not only are the 100,000 illegal immigrants in Oregon not leaving, they're driving," the board stated. The OAN already has the governor's support on this, and will continue to work with legislators to get a workable bill passed and signed during the 2013 session.

Safety Tip: Prevent the spread of flu and other germs

Flu season is in full effect. Almost every state is currently reporting a high level of people missing work or school. In the end, this costs everyone. The best way to fight the flu is to prevent getting sick in the first place. The Centers for Disease Control has an information page outlining steps everyone can take, which begin with getting a flu shot and washing up frequently. This safety tip is provided compliments of OSHA, SAIF, the Centers for Disease Control, and the OAN Safety and Insurance Committee.
