Newspapers endorse short-term driver's license proposal

Two of Oregon's largest daily newspapers have endorsed Senate Bill 833, which would create a short-term driver's license for individuals who for whatever reason don't present proof of legal residency. The result will be safer roads in Oregon due to fewer unlicensed, uninsured drivers.

Endorsing the bill were the Oregonian (Portland, Ore.) as well as the Register-Guard (Eugene, Ore.). The bill was drafted and is backed by a coalition of business, labor, faith, law enforcement and Latino organizations. The endorsements were published after the OAN reached out, on behalf of the coalition, to editorial boards.

A legislative hearing is scheduled for this Thursday at Hearing Room B in the Oregon Capitol building. The OAN and other coalition members will be present to speak in favor of the bill. Though success is not assured, backers remain hopeful.

Federal comprehensive immigration reform bill coming

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) — part of the bipartisan "Gang of Eight" senators working on comprehensive immigration reform — said on Sunday that a bill may be coming this week. "All of us have said that there will be no agreement until the eight of us agree to a big, specific bill, but hopefully we can get that done by the end of the week," Schumer said on CBS News' Face the Nation. The OAN remains committed to comprehensive reform that includes a stable future work force, permanent status for people already here, and effective border security. Our federal contract lobbyist continues to monitor the issue closely.

Beat the blight! Phytophthora ramorum Grower Tips

Welcome to a new feature in the Member Update: P. ramorum Grower Tips. Plant pathologists from OSU, WSU, Ascent Agricultural Services and USDA-ARS will be offering tips to help you stay free of Phytophthora ramorum, the pathogen that causes Sudden Oak Death. Watch for more each week.

Tip #1: Pre-notification requirement loosened, but be extra vigilant
As of Dec. 10, 2012, most Oregon growers are no longer required to notify receiving states when shipments include any of the five high-risk genera for Phytophthora ramorum. Only 14 nurseries in Oregon — including 11 nurseries that tested positive for P. ramorum in 2012, and 3 nurseries that tested positive since 2010 — need to pre-notify. These 14 nurseries will need to pre-notify until they test clean for three years. This spring, growers should be extra vigilant to ensure that P. ramorum does not get sent out of state. This week's tip is provided by OAN, Gary McAninch of the Oregon Department of Agriculture, and Jennifer Parke of Oregon State University.

Yet many no-cost or low-cost improvements are easily made. Identifying idle equipment, making minor operations and maintenance changes, or equipment retrofits... These are just a few simple measures that can bring noticeable improvements in energy efficiency and deliver immediate savings to your bottom line. Safety Tip: Avoid accidents on loading docks

Hazards such as spills, unsecured trailers and unstable loads are just a few of the accidents waiting to happen on loading docks. Loading docks are a hub of activity in nurseries and distribution centers. In most companies, this is the primary location of movement of product coming into and moving out of a facility. Take a moment to review this info sheet (PDF) and then put into practice these reminders for the safe operation and organization of lift trucks, trailers and docks.
