Senate Judiciary Committee approves immigration reform
The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved the bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform bill proposed by the "Gang of Eight" senators. The vote was 13-5. All of the Democrats on the committee voted yes; Republicans were split. Republican Sens. Lindsay Graham (S.C.), Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Orrin Hatch (Utah) voted yes; Republican Sens. Jeff Sessions (Ala.), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), John Cornyn (Texas), Ted Cruz (Texas) and Mike Lee (Utah) voted no. The bill is expected to be considered on the floor of the U.S. Senate in early June; meanwhile, a group of House members has proposed its own version. Achieving comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level has been a longtime goal for the OAN. We will continue to monitor developments in the process to make sure they are positive for the industry.

Send in Census of Agriculture forms by May 31
The Census of Agriculture, conducted once every five years, is the only source of consistent and comprehensive agricultural data for every state and county in the nation. It looks at farms, value of land, market value of agricultural production, farm practices, expenditures and other factors that affect the way farmers and ranchers do business. The information is used by agribusinesses, town planners, local governments, policy makers and others to shape farm programs, boost rural services and grow the future of farming.
Census forms must be completed by May 31, 2013. By responding to the Census, OAN members will help demonstrate the size and significance of our industry so that it receives its due representation. For more information about the Census, including tips on filling out your form, visit www.agcensus.usda.gov or call 1-888-424-7828.

Flower power fights orchard pests
Washington State University (WSU) researchers have discovered flowers that can control aphids, according to a report published on the Science Daily website. The researchers found that plantings of sweet alyssum attracted a host of spiders and predator bugs that in turn preyed on woolly apple aphids, a pest that growers often control with chemical sprays.
"After one week, aphid densities were significantly lower on trees adjacent to flowers than on control plots, and these differences were maintained for several weeks," said Lessando Gontijo, who led the research project while a doctoral student in the WSU Department of Entomology. Gear up for the Farwest Trade Show
The largest green industry trade show in the West, the Farwest Trade Show is set to take place August 22–24 in Portland, Ore.
New this year on the trade show floor is the Large Production Equipment area, where large equipment vendors can showcase their products — fork lifts, flat fillers, seeders, transplanters, potting machines, tractors, conveyors, mowers and more — in extra-large booth spaces with no sight and height limitations.
The specially designated area was created in response to an industry need, as growers have been experiencing increased production this spring. During the downturn in the economy, growers made due with the equipment they had, but now they are shopping for new and improved equipment to keep pace with demand.
Now is the time to attract, connect and close the sale with the buyers who will be at the Farwest Trade Show. Special discount pricing is available for Production Equipment Island Booths. Contact us today to secure your booth. See booth availability online or contact Jenni Burkhead, Farwest Trade Show Sales, at 503-559-4581 or email@example.com.
