Rep. Bonamici will visit with OAN members next Monday

U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) will be the guest speaker at the June 10 meeting of the OAN Government Relations Committee. The committee helps shape public policies that benefit OAN members and protect member interests with legislators and regulators in Salem and Washington, D.C.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. in the conference room at the OAN offices, 29751 S.W. Town Center Loop West, Wilsonville, Ore. All members are invited to attend and ask questions. Those attending are asked to RSVP to Jeff Stone at jstone@oan.org. Bonamici is regarded as a good friend and supporter of the nursery industry. She represents the First Congressional District of Oregon, which comprises the Northwest portion of the state. She won a special election to fill a vacancy in early 2012, then re-elected this past November.

Schumer predicts immigration bill will pass soon

The Senate's bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill — also known as the "Gang of Eight" bill — will pass by July 4, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) predicted on Sunday. Schumer is one of the bill's architects. Some House members have stated they don't expect the Senate bill will get anywhere in the House. Proponents, however, hope passage of the Senate bill would put pressure on House members to act. The OAN will continue to monitor the issue and work with Oregon's senators and representatives to support full, comprehensive, federal immigration reform sufficient to provide a stable and adequate future workforce.

Oregon Supreme Court upholds allowance of credits against minimum tax

The Oregon Supreme Court has upheld an Oregon Tax Court ruling that allows a company to offset corporate minimum tax with the Business Energy Tax Credit. This ruling may let some businesses get a refund for prior years filed if they used this credit, according to OAN member Moss Adams Certified Public Accountants. If you think your business could take advantage of this new development, click here to read more.

Nursery Guide Tip: Manage your listings year-round

Welcome to a new feature in the Member Update: Nursery Guide Tips. These help you get the most out of the new Online Nursery Guide. Watch for more each week.

Do you have seasonal offerings, or have you sold out of an inventory item that's listed on Nursery Guide? The new, online NurseryGuide.com lets you manage your listings at your convenience, 24/7.

It's as simple as logging on, clicking "My listings" at the top of the page, then deleting any items that are outdated. You can also add new listings up to your listing limit of plants, services and supplies that are new to you or are seasonally available. If you need more listings, contact Debbie Hopkins at 503-682-5089 or dhopkins@oan.org, and she will increase your listing limit. If your listings are online now, the listings are good through May 1, 2014 — a great marketing value! [More Nursery Guide Tips]

Can a native also be considered invasive?

Now here's a paradox. Western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) is choking out grassland habitat in Eastern Oregon. These trees are native, but the Native Americans used to burn them in order to keep the space open. Now that this no longer occurs, the junipers are gradually taking over and causing a whole host of problems, including degraded wildlife habitat and depleting the area's scarce water. Consequently, there's been some call to declare the tree a noxious weed. Read more about this confounding issue.

Safety Tip: Lighten your load with tractor loader safety training

Tractor loaders move materials easily and quickly, but they involve substantial risks if not used properly. A fully loaded loader, for instance, makes the tractor front heavy and could cause the tractor to tip or roll over, possibly causing serious injury. This informative handout is essential reading for anyone who operates a tractor loader. It covers the necessary precautions to avoid a rollover as well as other safety tips, bale handling and more. This information is presented to you courtesy of The Ohio State University Extension, SAIF, Oregon OSHA and the OAN Safety and Insurance Committee.
