House Republicans pass divided Farm Bill without food stamps
On July 11, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the new Farm Bill, H.R. 2642, by a vote of 216-208. This bill is a modified version of what the House rejected last month. The difference is that it includes only the agriculture provisions, and excludes food stamps (formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP). SNAP could instead be included in a separate bill. The vote was on party lines, with Republicans in favor and Democrats against.
This bill now has to be reconciled with the one passed by the Senate earlier this year, which does include food stamps. This seems unlikely. "SNAP and farm policies are likely to fail," said Jeff Stone, OAN executive director. [Read more]
Free show admission — Volunteer in the OAN Resource Center
Volunteer! OAN members are needed to help staff the OAN Resource Center (OAN's booth) at the Farwest Trade Show. The OAN Resource Center puts the newest edition of OAN Nursery Guide in the hands of buyers and provides Online Nursery Guide demonstrations. It's where information is provided about upcoming Lean Team classes and sustainability resources, and it's a place for members — and potential members — to have their questions answered. There's nothing better than peer-to-peer conversations!
Contact Ann Murphy (503-582-2011 or email@example.com) if you are able to volunteer any of the following shifts: Thursday or Friday, August 22 and 23, 11:45 a.m.–2 p.m.; 1:45–4 p.m.; and 3:45–6 p.m., or Saturday, August 24, 11:45 a.m.–2 p.m.; 1:45–4 p.m. You'll get onto the show floor free and have the satisfaction of helping your trade association help the industry!
Farwest 'speed dating' on the Demo Stage
Sometimes quick introductions are the best kind. Farwest Trade Show exhibitors have the opportunity to promote new products, services or plants to show attendees on the main show floor Demo Stage. In a moderated session, 3–4-minute "teaser" presentations help drive traffic to exhibitor booths providing additional exposure to your target audience. Tell us what you would like to promote by completing the form for plants or products and services. Email submission forms to Crystal Cady at firstname.lastname@example.org; the deadline is July 31. Participation is free to selected exhibitors, but space is limited. [Note: Plants in the New Varieties Showcase are not eligible.]

Nursery Guide Tip: Adding plant photos
Welcome to a new feature in the Member Update: Nursery Guide Tips. These help you get the most out of the new Online Nursery Guide. Watch for more each week.
Log on to www.NurseryGuide.com and go to your profile page. Take a look at the plants that don't have photos, or are accompanied by photos that aren't as good as the ones you have for the plant, or perhaps your photos show a different attribute of the plants. Multiple photos can be included for each plant. We want pictures that show it in the landscape, in a nursery environment, and close-ups of what makes the plant special, e.g., leaves or needles, flowers or bark. Email your photo to email@example.com. She'll let you know if we use the photos. If we do, it will be watermarked to give credit to your nursery. [More Nursery Guide Tips]
Safety Tip: Proactivity is key with return-to-work programs
Studies show injured workers off work longer than six months have only a 50 percent chance of returning to their job; after one year, the rate falls to just 10 percent! To improve these odds, SAIF has compiled this informative web page. It lists the ways to implement return-to-work programs that can help bring workers back to productivity quicker and more cost effectively. This information is presented to you courtesy of SAIF, Oregon OSHA and the OAN Safety and Insurance Committee.
