Kitzhaber vows to work with nursery industry on key issues
Gov. John Kitzhaber met with more than 25 OAN leaders last Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 12, inside the Oregon Capitol Building. They included members of the OAN Board of Directors as well as the OAN Government Relations Committee.
Together, they discussed issues that are important to nurseries, including water resource issues, the need for a stable workforce, and adequate funding for extension services and natural resource agencies. Of particular note, the governor mentioned that he is working with West Coast governors to invest in water supply infrastructure for irrigation as well as conservation.
The governor recognized the nursery industry’s prominence in Oregon agricluture. He complimented OAN for its strong leadership and bipartisan approach to solving problems, and offered to meet with the committee again sometime during the 2013 Legislature to check in on how the session is going. Additionally, he promised to use his “bully pulpit” as governor to educate Oregonians on the importance of agriculture to the state’s overall economic health.
After spending 30 minutes with the governor, the committee spent another 30 minutes with Richard Whitman, the governor’s top natural resources policy adviser.
