Future of water quality discussed at Aug. 5 meeting

The OAN hosted a meeting on Monday, Aug. 5, to discuss pesticide runoff on holding ponds and other current agricultural water quality issues. Rod Park, past-president of OAN, lead the discussion with Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) Deputy Director Lisa Hansen and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Deputy Director Joni Hammond. A wide range of OAN members attended the 90-minute briefing, which addressed the opportunities and challenges facing the nursery and greenhouse industry relating to water quality and state regulation.

It has been 20 years since the nursery industry formulated SB 1010 with the ODA in response to potential regulation over recycling of water, holding ponds and the general topic of agricultural water quality.

With new water quality issues looming, the OAN is refreshing the discussion and addressing the challenges facing the reuse of water and its impact on connected bodies of water. “It’s important for our industry to work with government leaders and help shape the policies that will benefit OAN members and protect member interests,” said Jeff Stone, OAN executive director.
