September Digger arrives in mailboxes

The September issue of Digger has been mailed to subscribers, and the cover story this month is on plants that thrive in wet sites (PDF). Due to the prevalence of bioswales and other urban water features, many nurseries — native plant growers in particular — have been trying hard to keep up with demand.

Other articles in this issue include:

You can also read this month's flipbook edition of Digger (Flash required; fast connection recommended). Please send your comments on the issue to editor Curt Kipp at ckipp@oan.org.

Two Farwest Trade Show exhibitors win free Southwest Airlines travel vouchers

Two OAN member companies have each won a $400 voucher on Southwest Airlines for their efforts in boosting attendance at the recent Farwest Trade Show, which saw a 15 percent bump in attendance over last year.

Youngblood Nursery won the first voucher by having the most complimentary tickets redeemed, with 20. Don Marjama Nursery Inc. won the second voucher by having the highest percentage of their tickets redeemed with 62 percent. Only redemptions from outside the company counted in these totals. The vouchers were provided courtesy of show exhibitor Southwest Airlines Cargo.

Two other voucher winners were announced earlier. Susan Wood of Woodlot Nursery in Woodburn, Ore. won the random exhibitor drawing at the chairman's reception on Saturday morning, Aug. 24, and Jim Fischer of Fischell Machinery in Clayton, Mich. won the random attendee drawing after the show concluded.

There is still an opportunity for Farwest Trade Show exhibitors to win the fifth and final $400 Southwest Airlines voucher. Simply return your contract for the 2014 Farwest Trade Show along with your 50 percent deposit or full payment by September 30, and you will be entered in a drawing to win.

Weekly Oktoberpest workshops set to begin on Oct. 8

Oregon State University and the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) will present OktoberPest, a series of pest management workshops, on Thursdays beginning Oct. 3. All sessions will be held at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (15210 NE Miley Road, Aurora, Ore.). Organizers have applied to make pesticide license recertification credits available. Stay tuned for further details on the workshops, which will be posted at Pacific Northwest Nursery IPM page.

Get the facts on neonicotinoid insecticides

The American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA), OFA–The Association of Horticulture Professionals, and the Society of American Florists (SAF) have collaborated on a letter (PDF) and a "frequently asked questions" (FAQs) document (PDF) to help separate the facts from fiction about the use of neonicotinoid insecticides. These documents can help growers, landscapers and retailers explain to their customers why these chemicals are an important part of a pest management strategy.

ANLA, OFA mail merger ballots

Members of the American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA) and OFA–The Association of Horticulture Professionals have begun voting on the proposed merger between the two organizations. Mail-in ballots are due Sept. 27, but those eligible can also vote in person, if they prefer, on Sept. 28 at the OFA office in Columbus, Ohio. The two organizations have put up a website at www.onevoiceoneindustry.com urging members to vote yes.

Webinars to address irrigation pathogens and water quality

A series of monthly webinars organized by USDA is scheduled to start on Oct. 8 and continue throughout 2014. The series will focus on irrigation pathogens and recycled water quality as these issues relate to crop health, agricultural water security and environmental footprint. There's no cost to participate. Click here for more information. The webinars are presented by USDA, Virginia Tech, Penn State, the University of Maryland, Rutgers University, Christopher Newport University and the University of California at Riverside.
