2013 Farwest Trade Show sees a 15 percent jump in attendance
Organizers and exhibitors were very pleased with attendance levels at the 2013 Farwest Trade Show, held Aug. 22–24 at the Oregon Convention Center in downtown Portland, Ore. When figures were added up, the three-day event had 15 percent more people coming through the gates than last year.
"I spent three days walking the aisles talking to exhibitors and attendees. The industry has turned an important corner," said Jeff Stone, executive director of Oregon Association of Nurseries, the trade association responsible for producing the show. "All success indicators were up. Exhibitors were writing more orders on the show floor.
"We are pleased show attendance was up, but we are more concerned about getting the right buyers to the show. Exhibitors were telling me that they were happy with the quality of the show traffic and satisfied that exhibiting at the show was a good investment. That says to me that meeting face-to-face is still important and that trade shows still have an important role to play." [Read more]

Wyden meets with nursery leaders at Farwest
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) made a special appearance at last week's Farwest Trade Show. He met with nursery leaders for a wide-ranging and open discussion on issues that are of concern to them. The participants included members of the OAN Government Relations Committee, which studies issues of interest to the industry.
Wyden opened with brief remarks about the U.S. economy, saying that quarterly growth of 1.7 percent (the most recent quarter) is not enough. "There are a lot of underemployed people," he said. "They're not making the wages they need to generate the economy." Click here for a full report on the meeting.
The next meeting of the Government Relations Committee will take place October 15 with U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. in the conference room at the OAN offices, 29751 S.W. Town Center Loop West, Wilsonville, Ore. All members are invited to attend and ask questions. Those attending are asked to RSVP to Jeff Stone at firstname.lastname@example.org.

September proclaimed "Fall is for Planting Month"
According to a proclamation by Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber, September was decreed "Fall is for Planting Month" in the state of Oregon. The announcement, made at last week's 2013 Farwest Trade Show, emphasizes the positive impact of nurseries on Oregon's economy, as well as the health and lifestyle benefits of gardening and planting trees, shrubs, flowers and edibles.
"Many people are finding that few tastes are as satisfying as food that they grew themselves, in their own yard," OAN Marketing Director Ann Murphy said. "Now's a great time to put in fruit trees and berry bushes. They can acclimate to their new home before going into dormancy, then come charging out of the chute come springtime. And there are several good winter vegetable crops you can plant right now." Click here for a full report.

Get the facts on immigrants and the agricultural sector
Now is a great time to learn about the contributions by immigrants to the U.S. economy. With Congress returning from summer recess, immigration reform will be a top issue for members of the U.S. House of Representatives. These fact sheets, published by Americas Society/Council of the Americas and including information provided by the OAN, detail the many reasons why immigrants are critical for the agricultural sector and the resulting benefits across the economy overall. While many Americans may take for granted the food on their grocery shelves, immigrants play a critical role in getting food from our farms to our supermarkets.
OAN Safety Tip: Choose and use your spray nozzles wisely
When using spray equipment, you want the chemicals to hit their intended target area and not surrounding plants, equipment or people. The proper selection and use of spray nozzles is an important part of reducing spray drift. The following guide, compliments of OAN Safety & Insurance Committee and Ohio State University, will help you and your employees get the job done in a safer and more effective way: English | Spanish
