President's Awards Banquet:
The OAN President's Awards Banquet and annual meeting attracted a strong turnout of more than 150 members and their families last Friday night at the Oregon Garden in Silverton. The convention also featured the passing of the president's gavel from wholesale grower Carson Lord (Tree Frog Nursery, Silverton, Ore.) to wholesale grower and nursery equipment dealer Matt Gold (Gold Hill Nursery and Midas Nursery Solutions, Hillsboro, Ore.). Gold will lead a 23-member board and 7-member Executive Committee in setting the broad direction for the nursery industry trade association in 2014.
2013 Awards Winners: Honoring the industry's best for their outstanding contributions:
The OAN annual convention honored several members for their outstanding achievements and service to the nursery industry.
The OAN Outstanding Service Award went to Gary English, owner of Landsystems Nursery in Bend, Ore. The award is given for outstanding long-term service to the industry and association.
English is a leading retailer, landscaper and wholesale grower in Oregon and the longtime president of the OAN Central Oregon Chapter. He has served on the OAN state board for more than two decades. In addition, he is noted for developing educational programs for gardeners and landscapers in Bend and Central Oregon. Some 22 years ago, he helped develop the Central Oregon Green Industry Conference, and remains involved in this successful event today.
The Clayton Hannon Distinguished Service Award went to Nancy Buley, the marketing director at J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. Inc., a wholesale nursery in Boring, Ore. The award is given for specific and notable service to the industry, and is named for Clayton Hannon, the former OAN executive director. Buley has been involved in efforts to promote the benefits of trees, including educating landscape architects, politicians, arborists and others.
OAN Honorary Lifetime Memberships were awarded to Tom Cordry and Val Tancredi for their outstanding lifetime service to the industry.
Cordry is the owner of Cash Flow Management, a credit risk management and collections firm based in Portland, Ore.. He has served in numerous industry leadership posts in the OAN Mt. Hood Chapter and elsewhere.
Tancredi recently retired from Stettler Supply Co., an irrigation supply company based in Salem, Ore. He too has served in numerous leadership roles with the OAN Willamette Chapter and various committees.
The Distinguished Member of the Horticultural and Allied Trades Award went to Tom Brewer of Myers Industries Lawn & Garden Group, a national firm with a location in Beaverton, Ore. The award is given for exemplary support for OAN, its members, and the industry. Brewer has been an active participant and leader in several of the OAN chapters, including the Clackamas Chapter (Canby-Oregon City area), the Sunset Chapter (Washington County-McMinnville area) and the Greenhouse Chapter (growers of annuals and perennials).
The New Nursery Professional of the Year Award went to Wayne Staehely, 27, who is the owner of Columbia Nursery, a wholesale grower based in Canby, Ore. The nursery grows rare conifers and Japanese maples, both in the field and in containers, for the wholesale trade.
The Distinguished Education Award went to Erin Rainey. The award is given for exceptional service through education, extension or government service. As a nursery professional, Rainey was the driving force behind creating the OAN booth at the annual Oregon Ag Fest, which is held every April at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem. The booth builds public awareness of the benefits of gardening, as well as the nursery industry's role in the Oregon economy.
The Committee of the Year Award was given to the Government Relations Committee. The award is given to a committee or chapter that is particularly successful in service to the OAN membership. The award was given this year in recognition of the committee's outstanding work on the driver's card issue, water supply issue, and overturning an unfair and discriminatory federal regulation that prevented equal marketplace access for Oregon growers.
And finally, the President's Five Star Awards, chosen by outgoing president Carson Lord, went to Joanne Tancredi, Cheryl Goar and the Arizona Nursery Association, the Government Relations Committee, Jay Sanders and Colette Lord. These awards are given in recognition of outstanding or crucial service, assistance or support rendered during the president's year.
