Volunteers help clean up after Peterkort Roses fire

A fire on Dec. 23 caused more than $100,000 in damage to a greenhouse at longtime OAN member business Peterkort Roses in Hillsboro. A work party was held on Saturday, Jan. 3, to help clean up the damage. More than 30 people, including some OAN members, volunteered.

"We are extremely thankful and heartened by the energetic folks who gave up their Saturday to help us," said Sandra (Peterkort) Laubenthal of Peterkort Roses. "We estimate that more than 6,000 damaged rose plants were lugged out by the volunteers -- a dirty and thorny job for sure!"

County in Washington state bans neonics on county property

This past December, Thurston County became the first county government in the state of Washington to ban the use of neonicotinoids on county property. County officials do not plan to ban the sale of neonicotinoids, which can be found in numerous lawn and gardening products.

"The goal of [the ban] is to send a big message to the public," Thurston County commissioner Sandra Romero said. "We want to be known as a pollinator-friendly community." Neonicotinoids have been blamed in the mass deaths of bees in Oregon and around the world, despite the fact that many bee experts think there is more likely a wide range of inter-related causes at blame for bee deaths. The cities of Seattle, Spokane, Olympia and Eugene, Oregon, also have adopted policies against neonics.

OSU plant pathologist featured for her commitment to educating nursery workers

Luisa Santamaria, plant pathologist at Oregon State University's North Willamette Research and Extension Center, was recently featured by Capital Press. The article highlighted her work training Spanish-speaking nursery workers to identify and treat plant diseases or, better yet, prevent them in the first place.

Santamaria is part of a six-person OSU team that will work on Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Rhodococcus fascians, which inflict deformities on hundreds of common landscaping plants. The USDA gave OSU a $3 million grant to study these two bacteria groups that cause severe damage to Oregon's $745 million nursery industry.
