Senate approves Farm Bill; president to sign itYesterday, the U.S. Senate approved the conference version of the $1 trillion, 10-year Farm Bill on a 68-32 bipartisan vote. The House had approved it last week, so all that's left now is for President Barack Obama to sign it, which he reportedly will do on Friday. Passage followed more than a year of disagreement between Republicans and Democrats, largely over program costs, and how much to cut from the food stamps program. » Read more
OSU names new head of Department of HorticultureBill Braunworth has been named head of the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU). Braunworth earned a doctorate in horticulture from OSU in 1986, and since 1992 has led OSU's Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Extension Program. He has also worked as an agronomist on water use and management in Egypt and as a horticultural researcher in Malawi. » Read the full press release.

Oregon Legislature begins 2014 sessionThe 2014 session of the Oregon Legislature began Monday and is scheduled to last 35 days. The main topics are expected to be the implementation of Cover Oregon, a possible attempt to approve the Columbia River Crossing as an Oregon-only project, and a bill expanding background checks on gun sales. A bill regarding pollinators is also expected. The OAN Government Relations team is monitoring all activity and working with legislators on both sides of the aisle to protect and defend the nursery industry. » Read more

Kitzhaber to attend OAN Government Relations Committee meetingThe OAN Government Relations Committee will meet with Gov. John Kitzhaber on Tuesday, Feb. 18 to discuss issues of importance to the industry. The committee will meet at noon at the offices of Associated Oregon Industries, 1149 Court St NE, Salem, Ore., across from the Oregon State Capitol building. After staff updates and discussion, the governor will arrive at 1 p.m. and stay for about 20 minutes. Richard Whitman, the governor's chief natural resources adviser, will meet with the group for another 40 minutes after that. This will be the second year in a row the committee has met with Kitzhaber and Whitman. This ongoing, open dialogue has been beneficial for our industry. Presentations should highlight examples and illustrations of leading-edge practices, including business, construction, design/build, green initiatives, irrigation, maintenance, management/leadership skills, customer service and other industry trends. Portland updates street tree planting lists, requests feedbackPortland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) Urban Forestry has updated its approved street tree planting lists. The lists are for property owners, contractors and developers to use when planting trees in the City right-of-way, typically the planting strip between the sidewalk and the curb. Willamette Chapter pesticide meeting — Feb. 18 Presented by OAN's Willamette Chapter, the evening will feature a trio of presenters. Janet Poncelet of Simplot Partners will address the Japanese beetle; Tim Lichatowich of RTI-Ag will discuss the difference between biofungicide and biofertility; and Robin Rosetta of OSU's Department of Horticulture will focus on the azalea lace bug. The meeting will take place at the Woodburn Health Center's Wellspring Conference Center in Woodburn, Ore.
