Merkley visits OAN Government Relations Committee

U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) visited with members of the OAN Government Relations Committee last week. He reported that the recently approved new Farm Bill was a success for nurseries, with expanded specialty crop funding, and also pointed out the inclusion of the Christmas tree check-off program for marketing.

Merkley expressed disappointment at the failure of the U.S. House of Representatives to take up the comprehensive and bipartisan immigration reform bill that the Senate passed in 2013. He said more pressure is needed before the House would bring the bill forward, but that perhaps there may be an opportunity to do that at the end of 2014. "There may be another window right after the election," Merkley said. "People seem to fundamentally know that the system is badly broken and getting worse."

Committee Chairman John Coulter of Fisher Farms told the senator, "I want to thank you for your role of leadership in issues important to us."

OSU plans to fill nursery research position at NWREC

Oregon State University is seeking candidates for the vacant nursery crop production research position at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC), OSU Horticulture Department Head Dr. Bill Braunworth told members of the OAN Government Relations Committee last week.

The job has sat vacant for the last three years due to budgetary concerns. The last person to hold the position, Dr. Jim Owen, left for a job at Virginia Tech in 2011. Braunworth said he will seek nursery industry people to review the job description and serve on the selection committee. Ideally, the position will close in May and a new person will be in place by September. The job will be funded with existing state and federal funds, plus grants.

» For those with questions or input, Braunworth can be reached at bill.braunworth@oregonstate.edu.

Kate Crawford joins the OAN staff

Please welcome Kate Crawford to the OAN staff. She started work last Friday as the new event and program coordinator. She will work on the Farwest Trade Show and other OAN programs and events.

"I'm really looking forward to getting to know the nursery industry and the OAN members," she said. "I'd like to help make Farwest the best it can be. It's one of the best known trade shows in the industry, and to be part of that is exciting."

Kate recently moved to Portland. She holds a degree in international business from Florida Atlantic University. Her prior work experience is mainly in corporate meeting and event planning. She worked for 13 years with CMC & Associates, a family-owned conference management firm based in Tallahassee, Fla. She said she hopes that her experience with family-owned businesses will be helpful in the nursery industry.

Prior to that, she worked with the Marriott and Westin hotel companies. She is also a certified yoga teacher and health coach.

Kate replaces Jamie Fletcher, who is leaving to hike the entire Pacific Crest Trail beginning in April. Kate can be reached at kcrawford@oan.org or 503-682-5089.

California repeals Cereal Leaf Beetle Quarantine

On March 18, the California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) issued a statement that it will rescind the Cereal Leaf Beetle (CLB) Quarantine effective April 1, 2014. The repeal will remove restrictions on the movement of covered commodities from Oregon into or through California. Covered commodities include, but are not limited to, Austrian, Scotch and red pine (Pinus nigra, P. sylvestris and P. resinosa, respectively), as well as grass sod, including containerized ornamental grasses. In lieu of the quarantine, CDFA will develop a CLB integrated pest management program, including grower outreach and education, CLB field surveys, recommended treatments and release of bio-control agents.

Candidates file for Oregon Legislature

The filing deadline has passed for candidates for the Oregon House and Senate. Sixteen of the 30 Senate seats are up for election, as are all 60 House seats. Some parties have multiple candidates for the same seat in the May primary elections. Other candidates have a clear path to the November election, and a select few face no challenger at all.

You can view a list of all the races. The Secretary of State's office has posted an electronic voter's pamphlet here, where you can review submitted candidate statements.

OAN members are urged to choose the nursery friendly candidates in each race. ONPAC will hold a bipartisan interview and endorsement process later in the year to make sure candidates must earn our vote. Voting records in the 2014 and 2013 Legislatures, and prior, will also be considered. In the meantime, the Duffers Classic golf tournament will be held on June 12 to help fund modest campaign contributions to the endorsed candidates.

Unconfirmed report of poinsettia thrips at nursery

Officials at the OSU Extension Service and the state say they have heard a report of poinsettia thrips, also known as impatiens thrips, at an Oregon nursery. The sighting, though unconfirmed, highlights the need for isolation and careful scouting of incoming nursery stock for pests, pathogens and symptoms. Reported hosts include poinsettias, Irish shamrock, impatiens, chrysanthemums, Dieffenbachia and Syngonium (Araceae), Cardamine hirsuta (Crucifeae), Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Malvaceae) and other flowers and woody ornamentals.

OAN supports Arbor Week activities across Oregon

To commemorate Arbor Week (April 7–11), the Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) has teamed up with Oregon Community Trees (OCT), a nonprofit organization of arborists, urban planners, foresters and others that promotes healthy urban and community forests. The organizations awarded grants totaling $2,760 for Arbor Day activities in six Oregon cities: Medford, Tualatin, Klamath Falls, Forest Grove, Coburg and Cottage Grove. The cities will take part in the national Tree City USA program by hosting a variety of events, from tree pruning demonstrations and tree plantings, to educational presentations held in coordination with local schools. This is the second year OAN and OCT have collaborated on Oregon Arbor Week Celebrations.

OAN retail maps are on their way to retail members

The OAN's Retail Nurseries & Garden Centers Guide is heading to retailers this week, just in time for spring gardening (and plant shopping!) season. OAN members selling retail with a storefront, online or via catalog sales are listed in the guide, as are members offering landscape services.

Each year, the newest edition of the guide is launched at the Yard, Garden & Patio Show, where thousands are distributed to enthusiastic gardeners. The guides will also be shipped to chambers of commerce, visitor associations, plant associations and garden clubs. OAN members are encouraged to share the guides with customers to promote gardening in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
