New H-2B regulations may present hurdles for small businesses

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Labor released new H-2B visa regulations last week after previous versions were struck down by a federal judge. The new rules go into effect this week.

While larger employers may be able to follow the rules, added requirements may make it more difficult for smaller employers to use the H-2B program, said Daniel Kowalski of the Fowler Law Firm in Austin, Texas.

2015 Ag Fest sets new attendance record

The 28th annual Ag Fest saw record crowds, with 20,145 people — a 15 percent jump over last year — attending the two-day celebration of Oregon's agricultural community.

Held this past April 25–26 in Salem, the festival also raised record funds — more than $82,000 in cash donations and over $32,000 in-kind donations. Proceeds go to produce and grow the show, as well as some grants to FFA programs.

In addition, Ag Fest was the site of the annual OAN Willamette Chapter plant sale. Look for a recap in a future edition of Member Update.

Lawn-damaging beetle confirmed in Washington state

Washington state has a new turf pest, the European chafer (Rhizotrogus majalis), a beetle of the Scarabaeidae family. According to Todd Murray of the Washington State University Extension, a Seattle-area homeowner submitted a large, C-shaped grub in association with major lawn damage. The identification was later confirmed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

Right now, the European chafer is in the larval stage. Turf damage can appear similar to that of European crane fly. To scout for it, inspect areas with turf damage for C-shaped scarab larvae. Turf damaged by animals, such as raccoon and skunks, can also be a sign of infestation (as with crane flies). Adult beetles have been detected in other areas but no established infestations have been reported.

This is a good year to look for infestations in lawns as reports of crane fly damage have been the highest in many years. If you find other lawns infested with European chafer, email tmurray@wsu.edu or call 360-303-2223.

Plan to attend today's meeting on NWREC nursery position

The Oregon Association of Nurseries is hosting a meeting today on the Professor of Nursery Production position at OSU's North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC). Bill Braunworth, department head at OSU's Horticulture School, and Mike Bondi, NWREC director, will lead the meeting and review last fall's unsuccessful search, as well as possible changes to the position description and announcement that will go out in the next round.

The meeting will take place from 4–5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6 at the OAN office in Wilsonville. Please RSVP to Mike Bondi, michael.bondi@oregonstate.edu. For any other questions, contact Jeff Stone, jstone@oan.org.

Salem-Keizer Volcanoes baseball team to honor the Oregon nursery industry

Please save the date for Oregon Nursery Industry Night on Friday, June 26, as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Class A Affiliate of the world champion San Francisco Giants, take on the Spokane Indians at 6:35 p.m. at Keizer Stadium. All members are encouraged to attend.

The game will include a first pitch from OAN President Mike Coleman, as well as between-innings presentations that will help the public understand the positive impact the nursery industry has on Oregon's economy. There will also be a post-game fireworks display afterwards.

This special night will be part of the team's new five-night Tribute to Oregon Agriculture June 26–30, but nurseries will have the prime spot — and the only game with fireworks! There will be a seating block for OAN members. Download the flyer for details and special ticket rates.
