Stone speaks at May Day immigration reform rally
OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone was among the speakers when supporters of immigration reform held a May Day rally in Salem.
Stone discussed the upcoming vote on the driver’s card bill, which was passed by the 2013 Legislature. The bill would allow the state to issue a four-year driver’s card to residents regardless of the documents they carry. Opponents gathered signatures to refer it to the ballot. A yes vote affirms the original legislation. Stone told the crowd that the measure has the association’s full backing.
“Americans will be watching what happens in Oregon,” Stone said. “We can choose a path that affirms that our roads need drivers who know the rules of the road and a community that is inclusive to all workers and families. Or, we can be known as the next Arizona or Georgia, (known for) their anti-immigrant zeal. We cannot let fear win in November. Please join the faith community, labor, law enforcement, immigrant rights groups and business to pass the driver’s card legislation this November.”

ODA open house to discuss water quality implementation is tonight
The Oregon Department of Agriculture is holding an open house tonight (Wednesday, May 7) to discuss its new water quality Strategic Implementation Area (SIA) in the Noyer Creek area of Clackamas County. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the City of Damascus Annex building, 19750 SE Damascus Lane, Damascus. (The meeting was moved from a previously announced location.)
Under the SIA, the agency will initiate and conduct agricultural water quality site inspections. Agricultural producers are encouraged to attend the meeting, ask questions and learn more about this process. While this process could serve to underscore the effectiveness of the existing agricultural water quality program, it is also a sign that growers need to remain engaged in water quality issues, as efforts continue to manage sources of nonpoint runoff.
A second meeting — this one concerning the Mill Creek area in Wasco County — will be held at 7 p.m. this Friday night (May 9) at The Dalles Senior Center, 1112 W. Ninth St., The Dalles.
