White House unveils National Strategy to Promote Pollinator Health

The Obama administration has unveiled its new National Strategy to Promote Pollinator Health. The strategy and its accompanying Pollinator Research Action Plan outline needs and priority actions to better understand pollinator losses, improve pollinator health, and to enhance pollinator habitat.

The strategy will seek to manage the way forests burned by wildfire are replanted, establish pollinator gardens at federal habitats, and preserve roadside habitats where bees feed, among other initiatives. The Environmental Protection Agency also will re-evaluate neonicotinoid pesticides, which have been implicated in the decline of pollinator populations.

Over the past five years, winter losses of commercial honeybee colonies have averaged roughly 30 percent. A consortium of universities and research laboratories announced last week that beekeepers lost 42.1 percent of their colonies between April 2014 and 2015, an 8 percent spike from the previous year, and that the number of summer deaths exceeded winter deaths for the first time since the survey began in 2010.

WATER the theme of this year's Oregon Invasive Weed Awareness Week

This week, May 17–23, marks the eleventh annual Oregon Invasive Weed Awareness Week. The theme this year is WATER, which stands for Weeds Attack Threatened Environmental Resources.

Invasive noxious weeds are not only a problem for agriculture, but they also threaten Oregon's precious water resources. "Most of the 128 state listed noxious weeds have some impact on watershed health as a whole," said Tim Butler, manager of the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Noxious Weed Control Program. "A lot of the aquatic weed species directly impact water systems. But even terrestrial weeds impact the upper reaches of watersheds that filter into our streams, rivers and other water bodies. With many of these species, if we can get to them early and prevent them from getting established before they become significant, we can help restore watershed health in the state."

Reminder: June 1 deadline to certify conservation compliance

The USDA's Risk Management Agency reminds producers, including nursery, fruit and vegetable producers, that they need to have their Highly Erodible Conservation and Wetland Conservation Certification form (AD-1026) on file with their local USDA service center by June 1, 2015. The 2014 Farm Bill required all producers to file the form by June 1 to become or remain eligible for crop insurance premium support.
