ONPAC-endorsed candidates prevail in primary election

State Rep. Vic Gilliam (R-Silverton) and Washington County Commissioner Bob Terry each fended off challengers in the May 20 primary election. Both candidates were endorsed by the Oregon Nurseries' Political Action Committee in what were identified as key races. The victories mean Terry will return to office for another four-year term. He is the owner of Fisher Farms, and a past president of OAN and ANLA. Meanwhile, Gilliam advances to the general election in November, where he will face Democratic challenger Scott A. Mills.

OAN stops production of Yard, Garden & Patio Show

The Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) announced last week that it will stop production of its annual consumer gardening event, the Yard, Garden & Patio Show. In the announcement, the organization's board of directors cited low member support and participation, and the high financial risk of producing the event, as reasons for discontinuing the event.

OAN remains committed to supporting Oregon's retail nurseries and garden centers in a variety of ways. The Plant Something™ campaign is encouraging more people to experience the joy of gardening, as well as the lifestyle benefits. Last fall, the OAN secured a proclamation from the governor that Fall is for Planting. The popular Random Acts of Gardening newsletter keeps local gardeners informed and inspired. Also, the Retail Nurseries and Garden Centers Guide will continue to point eager gardeners to OAN-member retail and landscaping businesses.

» If you have other suggestions on how the OAN can support the retail sector going forward, please feel free to contact OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone at jstone@oan.org or 971-235-3868.

Oregon Invasive Weed Awareness Week highlights protection of habitats and ecosystems

This week, May 18–24, marks the tenth annual Oregon Invasive Weed Awareness Week. The theme this year is SHARE, which stands for Saving Habitats and Restoring Ecosystems.

Invasive noxious weeds are not only a problem for agriculture, but they also threaten Oregon's natural environment. "Most of the 118 or so state listed noxious weeds have some impact on watershed health as a whole," Tim Butler, manager of the Oregon Department of Agriculture's Noxious Weed Control Program, said. "Many of those weeds specifically impact riparian areas and some are aquatic weeds that directly affect water. With many of these species, if we can get to them early and prevent them from getting established before they become significant, we can help restore watershed health in the state."

Minnesota legislature passes two bills for bees

Last Friday, the Minnesota House and Senate approved a bill designed to protect bees and other pollinators from neonicotinoids and other so-called "pollinator lethal insecticides" in garden plants. The legislation prohibits the labeling and advertisement of plant material as "beneficial to pollinators" if it has been treated with and has a detectable level of systemic insecticide.

This is the nation's second statewide legislation passed with the intent to better protect pollinators. In March of this year, Oregon passed the "Save Oregon's Pollinators Act" (H.B. 4139-A).

The Minnestoa lege also passed a beekeeper compensation law – part of an omnibus finance bill – that will create an emergency response team to respond to colony losses that are suspected to be pesticide-related, and compensate beekeepers if pesticides are implicated in the bee kill. Both bills are currently awaiting Gov. Mark Dayton's signature.

Wilco builds bigger store in Bend

Wilco, the Northwest's largest agricultural supply cooperative, has started construction of a new 35,000 sq. ft. store in Bend, Oregon, to replace its existing 3,000 sq. ft. store. The new store will be located at the intersection of Highway 20 and 27th Street, replacing the Regal Cinema Theatre. The store will feature a 5,000 sq. ft. covered greenhouse, 15,000 sq. ft. warehouse with full-service load out, and expanded offerings in all other departments: pet grooming and supplies, lawn and garden, livestock equipment and supplies, work wear and lifestyle clothing, and convenience hardware and paint. It will open later this year, adding 20 jobs.

Safety Tip: Know how to treat insect bites and stings

Most insect bites and bee stings have a temporary reaction — a bump and some itching — that can be easily relieved by applying a paste of baking soda and water. Some cases, however, are much more severe: Approximately 10 percent of the population can develop a hypersensitivity to stings and bites, causing difficult breathing, hives, nausea, dizziness and even shock.

This informative handout covers the ins and outs of what you should know to effectively treat an insect bite or sting, as well as precautions you can take to avoid being bitten or stung. This information is presented to you courtesy of SAIF, Oregon OSHA and the OAN Safety and Insurance Committee.
