Oregon Secretary of State visits with OAN members
Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown was the guest speaker at the June 10 meeting of the OAN Government Relations Committee. Brown said that she appreciates the leadership role that the nursery industry has taken on the driver's card and other issues. "You guys are always at the table, always willing to help," she said. "I have to tell you, your voices are some of the most important on this issue." Brown also discussed the role that her office plays in elections, auditing of state agencies and functions, state record-keeping, and helping small businesses. Next month's guest speaker will be State Treasurer Ted Wheeler. That meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 8 at the OAN office, and all members are invited to attend.

Nursery industry rebounding, according to Portland Tribune
The nursery industry is on the upswing, according to an article published last week in the Portland Tribune. The article, by Julia Anderson, indicated that retailers have adapted to the changes brought on by the recession, and that wholesale growers are rebounding thanks to a healthier market for new housing. The article represents a positive result for the OAN's media relations efforts, which help tell the industry's story to the public. The story included positive mentions for Portland Nursery, and the Plant Something initiative, which helps the public see the lifestyle benefits of gardening.

EPA opens public comment period on buffer zones for five pesticides
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requesting comments on the proposed streamside no-spray buffer zones to protect endangered or threatened Pacific salmon and steelhead in California, Oregon and Washington state. The stipulated injunction would settle litigation brought against EPA by the Northwest Center for Alternatives to Pesticides and others in U.S. District Court in Washington state. The no-spray buffer zones will apply to the pesticides carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, malathion and methomyl. The EPA will evaluate all comments received during the 30-day public comment period to determine whether all or part of the proposed stipulated injunction warrants reconsideration or revision. The comment period will remain open until July 7, 2014.
