Farwest unveils full slate of seminars and speakers

Organizers of the 2016 Farwest Show announced the full slate of educational speakers and seminars scheduled for this year's event, taking place August 25–27 in Portland, Oregon. The nursery education track, delivered by some of horticulture's most celebrated veterans and rising stars, will give growers a comprehensive menu of topics and provide ideas and knowledge to take home from the show and raise the bar for their companies.

"This year's nursery education will be outstanding," said Allan Niemi, director of events at the Oregon Association of Nurseries, producers of the Farwest Show. "We've assembled the best and brightest of the industry. They're on the cutting edge of research, issues and trends that have great importance for nursery growers in all regions of the country."

'Women in Horticulture' to feature Jenny Peterson at the 2016 Farwest Show

The 2016 Farwest Show will present the "Women in Horticulture" networking event to establish connections, share opportunities and encourage involvement to advance the industry. The event will celebrate the vital roles women are playing in today's business and spotlight the life and work of featured guest, Jenny Peterson — garden designer, author of Indoor Plant Decor and owner of J. Peterson Garden Design in Austin, Texas. The gathering will take place on Friday, August 26 from 3:30–5 p.m. in VIP Room B at the Oregon Convention Center.

Industry celebrates at annual Pioneer Dinner

The OAN Mt. Hood Chapter welcomed members of all chapters to its annual Pioneer Dinner, held last Wednesday evening at Persimmon Country Club in Gresham, Oregon. A pioneer is someone who is better than 60 years old and with 20 or more years of experience in the nursery industry. Photographs from the event can be viewed on Facebook.



Farwest Show volunteers needed!

The OAN event team is looking for volunteers to help make some of Farwest's features even more fun and memorable. Would you like to spend the day in Nursery Country or attend the stellar seminars lined up for this year? Or how would you like competing against your fellow retailers to win some prizes in our container and merchandising competitions?

USDA publishes research on brown marmorated stink bugs in orchard crops

A new publication, "Integrated Pest Management for Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs in Orchard Crops," was released recently by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Specialty Crops Research Initiative.

The pest was accidentally imported from Asia in the 1990s. It was first spotted in Oregon in 2004 and has caused economic damage in a variety of specialty crops including hazelnuts, apples and peaches. The stink bug is a particular worry for orchardists because its feeding produces brown rotten spots on the flesh of fruits.

Clackamas Chapter golf outing postponed

The planned Clackamas Chapter golf outing that had been scheduled for this Saturday, July 9, has been postponed. A rescheduled date will be announced later. The gathering will take place at the Frontier Golf Course (2965 N Holly St, Canby), a par three course that is extremely family friendly. Lunch and kids activities will be provided. Watch for details when the new date is announced, or contact Amanda Staehely at 503-320-3466 or amandastaehely@gmail.com.

This year's Growers Showcase at the 2016 Farwest Show will highlight "Plants with a Purpose: Pollinators." Growers who are Farwest exhibitors can showcase their pollinator-friendly plants in the creatively designed Growers Showcase. Clackamas Chapter - POSTPONED

Retail and Greenhouse Chapters
JULY 27 - On Wednesday, July 27, the Retail and Greenhouse chapters will meet at The Oregon Garden, 879 W Main St., Silverton, Oregon. Tours of new plants — presented by Ball FloraPlant, EuroAmerican, PanAmerican Seed and Selecta — will be given at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., followed by dinner and presentations from Ron Newble of EuroAmerican on the new selections. Also, Ty Boland and Mark Hunter of The Oregon Garden will give updates on the current garden plantings and the future direction of the botanical attraction. Cost is $30.
