Pest alert: South American palm weevil detected in Arizona
USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the detection of a dead South American palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum) in Yuma, Arizona, on May 20, 2015. This is the first detection of the weevil in Arizona.
The weevil is native to Central and South America and is an important pest of palms, specifically date and coconut palms. Sugarcane is also a host for this pest. The weevil also is a vector for a nematode Bursaphelenchus cocophilus, which can cause red-ring disease in coconut and oil palms.
In Memoriam: Bruce Usrey
The Oregon Association of Nurseries is saddened to report the passing of Bruce Usrey, former CEO of Monrovia. The company has shared the following statement:
For nearly 50 years Bruce guided the growth and expansion of Monrovia, the largest grower of premium container plants in the United States. After serving in the United States Air Force, he joined Monrovia in 1968 and managed plant production. From 1986 to 1998, he was chief operating officer, overseeing the company's expansion of new growing locations in Dayton, Oregon, and Visalia, California.
In 1998, Bruce was named president and later, in 2002, chief executive officer. Under his leadership Monrovia saw another surge in growth with its merger with Wight and Berryhill Nurseries, adding three East Coast growing fields to Monrovia's production. In recent years, Bruce served as a managing director of the company, and was based in Dayton, Oregon.
"Bruce was a true horticultural craftsman," said Miles Rosedale, CEO of Monrovia. "He will be greatly missed."
Bruce is survived by his wife, Susie, who has also worked for Monrovia for nearly 40 years. Condolences can be mailed to: Susie Usrey, PO Box 280, Dayton, OR 97114.
