$36.5 million in grants awarded for specialty crop research and extension investments
Nineteen grants totaling $36.5 million were recently awarded for research to support American farmers growing fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, horticulture and nursery crops. The grants are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture Specialty Crop Research Initiative, authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill. Oregon State University was among the grant recipients and will receive $3.1 million for research on hazelnut production.
Time to inspect trees for Asian longhorned beetle
August is the peak time of year when the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) can be found, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Anyone who spots this invasive pest should contact APHIS and local agricultural departments so the beetles can be quickly contained to keep them from spreading.
ALB has the potential to destroy millions of acres of America's hardwoods, including maple, birch, elm, willow, ash and poplar trees. The beetle is slow to spread on its own during the early stages of an infestation, so early detection and reporting is critical to containing it. People can also help by not moving firewood, which can transport the beetle hidden inside to new areas.
For information about ways to keep ALB from spreading and eradication program activities, visit www.AsianLonghornedBeetle.com and www.HungryPests.com. If you spot ALB, contact Christopher Deegan, Oregon State Plant Health Director, at Christopher.Deegan@aphis.usda.gov or 503-326-2969.
