Sen. Wyden to speak at Farwest on Friday morning - Corrected Time

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the OAN Government Relations Committee, which will be held at the Farwest Trade Show. The meeting will be from 10-11:30am, Friday, August 22 at the Oregon Convention Center (room A108-109). (Note the change in time.)

All members are invited to attend. There will be updates on state and federal issues affecting the nursery industry, including the upcoming Oregon Safe Roads driver's card campaign. Those planning to come are asked to RSVP to Jeff Stone at jstone@oan.org.

Earlier this year, Wyden was elected the new chairman of the powerful U.S. Senate Finance Committee. The OAN is consistently able to secure guest speakers in prominent leadership positions, a sign that its advocacy program is esteemed and effective.

Farwest Show begins tomorrow!

The doors will open tomorrow for the 2014 Farwest Trade Show at the Oregon Convention Center in downtown Portland!

It's little wonder that preregistration is up from last year. This year's show has added nearly 50 new exhibitors to the mix, as well as exciting new features like The Idea Center and the Growers Showcase. However, show week activities are already well underway. The new Equipment Innovation Day (see below) was held on Tuesday at Woodburn Nursery and Bountiful Farms, and the two Farwest Nursery Tours are being held today.

You can keep up with all the happenings in multiple ways:

  1. Download the Farwest Trade Show app from iTunes or Google Play and turn on push notifications.
  2. Follow @FarwestShow and @DiggerMag on Twitter, and post using the hashtag #FarwestShow.
  3. Like the Farwest Trade Show on Facebook.
  4. Pick up your copy of Digger: Farwest Edition at the show for great articles, as well as details on exhibitors, seminars and special events (Pub Crawl, Women in Horticulture, Young Nursery Professionals and more).
  5. Log on to www.FarwestShow.com.

Equipment Innovation Day showcases labor-saving equipment

Almost 100 Farwest show goers attended the first annual Equipment Innovation Day on Tuesday, August 19. Manufacturers and equipment representatives were on hand to demonstrate the latest in new labor-saving nursery equipment, including contour trimmers, tray fillers, transplanters, B&B tree diggers, single-pass rotary spreading machines, smart sprayers and more. The demonstrations took place at two host nurseries, Woodburn Nursery & Azaleas and Bountiful Farms.

"This was a great opportunity for sellers to meet with buyers and show off their innovative machinery," Ryan Basile, 2014 Farwest chairman, said. "This was a great start to this year's Farwest, and I think it's just going to get bigger and better next year."

Politifact rules driver's card opponents claim mostly false

Politifact.com, a website that fact-checks claims made by politicians and others, has ruled against Protect Oregon Driver's Licenses, a group opposing Measure 88, the Oregon driver's card bill. Reporter Dana Tims of The Oregonian ruled that PODL was stretching the truth when it claimed the driver's card bill was hatched in secret, behind closed doors.

Tims noted that the bill was openly discussed in several hearings, before being approved in spring of 2013. It was later referred to the November ballot by signature campaign and is now known as Measure 88.

The Oregon Safe Roads campaign, which favors Measure 88, recently began in earnest. It is accepting endorsements as well as donations.

Grower reports plant losses after going neonic-free

Bell Nursery in Elkridge, Maryland, wanted to see what the impact would be if they grew plants for a season without the use of neonicotinoids as part of their pest management plan.

The results, according to CEO Gary Mangum? "We lost product that we would not have lost had we been using our normal chemical rotations," he wrote in Greenhouse Grower magazine.

"We also learned that as we reduce chemicals available in the rotation, systemic or otherwise, we run the risk of developing resistance to the remaining treatment options we have to choose from, and/or resorting to broader-spectrum, typically harsher chemicals," he added. "In addition, many of the replacement chemicals are non systemic and foliar, requiring multiple applications and thereby increasing worker exposure."

Science has not concluded that the chemicals are harmful to the bee population when properly used according to label directions. However, public pressure is causing some retailers to demand neonic-free plants. The OAN and AmericanHort both continue to monitor this issue. The OAN's Jeff Stone is part of the governor's Pollinator Health Task Force, which will issue recommendations in the fall.
