China's new shipping requirements affect American shipments
The People's Republic of China has adopted new requirements for shipments from countries, including the United States, that have reported Zika-virus infections.
The requirements specify that the shipments must come with proof of disinsection, which is not to be confused with disinfection. In this case, that means that all mosquitoes, larvae and eggs must be killed. This can be accomplished via physical means (such as trapping, air curtains or integrated pest management techniques) or via chemical treatment. Shipments found on arrival to contain mosquito adults, eggs or larvae will be subject to disinsection by Chinese authorities, and the shipper will be charged.
Of note, certificates of treatment to accompany shipments need not be issued by government authorities. The USDA has published a bulletin (PDF) with detailed information.
Garden Writers Day set for Friday, August 26
In appreciation of the key role garden writers play in promoting the industry and educating the public, Farwest Show organizers have designated Friday, August 26, as Garden Writers Day. Members of GWA: The Association for Garden Communicators will have special access to the expo trade show, education sessions and other valuable networking events taking place that day.
GWA will be in Booth 22048 on the expo floor to facilitate connections with growers, garden centers and others who can benefit from GWA services.
GWA will present a free seminar — "Social Media and Digital Communication Learning Exchange" — from 1:30–2:30 p.m. in Room B115-116. A panel of experts will guide attendees on how to start connecting with customers digitally through e-newsletters and post-worthy pictures, and they will touch on key components of social media marketing including blogging, photography and writing.
Also, GWA Connect will meet from 5–6 p.m. Friday at Gather Food & Drink in the Doubletree Hotel Portland, 1000 NE Multnomah St., a few blocks from the Oregon Convention Center. Registration is free, and non-members and visitors are welcome to attend.
