Nursery leaders, water experts discuss 'Water in the West'
Future water supplies are a huge concern for wholesale nurseries, as well as agriculture as a whole. The industry needs a seat at the table. And with that in mind, the Western Region Nursery & Landscape Executives Association held two panel discussions, each an hour long, at last week's meeting in Silverton.
The issues discussed included urban development and wastewater treatment, revamping the Endangered Species Act, the high cost and bureaucratic process of building reservoirs, how to encourage water conservation through incentives, and how to solve the global food challenge.
"All of us in the West are facing ever more pressing issues concerning water," said OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone. "Collaboration is key. It's critical that we as organizations work with one another to protect this valuable resource, build coalitions and focus on outcomes."

Energy Trust offers cash incentives to help pay for under-bench heating
Greenhouse owners can save energy and money with under-bench heating systems and Energy Trust of Oregon incentives. Replacing forced air with radiant heat systems under the plant benches results in lower energy costs by heating down low where the plants are, rather than heating the entire greenhouse space. Under-bench heating also provides greater control over soil and plant temperatures for optimal growing conditions.
» To learn how Energy Trust can help you save on under-bench heating for a greenhouse, talk to your vendor, or visit www.energytrust.org/industrial-and-ag.
