Coleman assumes presidency as OAN honors the industry's best at Convention
Outgoing president Matt Gold of Midas Nursery Solutions/Gold Hill Sales passed the gavel to incoming president Mike Coleman of Arrowhead Ornamentals at the 2014 OAN Convention, held last Friday (Oct. 24) at the Oregon Garden Resort in Silverton.
The convention was highlighted by the presentation of several awards to outstanding OAN members, including Sean Hogan, Jerry Simnitt, Jeff Stone, Tonya Gold, Dick Joyce, Jim Gilbert, Mark Sander, John Coulter, Gail Gredler, Jason Hupp and the Willamette Chapter (award winners pictured below). The gathering was hosted by past presidents Bob Terry and Kathy LeCompte.

Action Alert: EPA rule change could affect ponds, ditches, nurseries
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently proposed a Clean Water Act rule change known as "waters of the U.S." The proposed rule would give the EPA regulatory jurisdiction over a variety of waterways and water sources, many of which are not considered navigable waterways. These could include ditches, as well as golf course and farm ponds. The rule could thereby affect chemical use as well as ground disturbances (such as planting).
Although AmericanHort supports sound environmental practices, its Government Relations team feels that this rule is an example of regulatory overreach. Legislation to address the matter passed the U.S. House of Representatives in September but is stalled in the U.S. Senate. AmericanHort is hoping the EPA will withdraw the rule change and make legislation unnecessary.
Time is running out to mail in your ballot
A reminder: Election Day is next Tuesday, November 4, and your vote matters. All ballots must be in the hands of election officials by 8 p.m. sharp that evening. Postmarks don't count.
The Oregon Nurseries' Political Action Committee reviewed and interviewed candidates in several races for the Oregon Legislature. Endorsements were based on support for core issues that matter to the nursery industry.

OAN recognizes four public officials as 'Friends of Nurseries'
Four public officials were honored as 'Friends of Nurseries' at the 2014 OAN Convention. They were recognized for taking strong stands on behalf of the industry.
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden was honored for lending crucial support to the Smart Sprayer project being led by Oregon State University Extension and several partners. State Treasurer Ted Wheeler was recognized for his key role in water supply planning and future provision for agriculture and other users. State Sen. Vic Gilliam and State Rep. Jessica Vega-Pederson were honored for lending crucial support for the Oregon driver's card bill. The OAN thanks all four for recognizing and supporting the needs of the green industry.
Oregon minimum wage will increase to $9.25 in 2015
Oregon's minimum wage will increase 15 cents to $9.25 an hour in 2015, state labor officials announced last month. The raise will affect an estimated 142,000 workers across the state. Oregon has the nation's second-highest statewide minimum wage, behind only Washington.
Webinar: Study says customers will pay for green label
Will retail customers pay more for plants that are labeled "water conserving" or "disease free"? According to Dr. James Pease, professor of agricultural and applied economics at Virginia Tech, the answer is yes.
Dr. Pease conducted a survey and found that the difference, in fact, could vary from 9 percent to as high as 60 percent, depending on the type of plant. He will share the results in detail during a webinar that is set for noon Eastern time (9 a.m. on the West Coast) on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Industry members are invited to participate. Simply log on to https://connect.extension.iastate.edu/irrigation-water and select "enter as a guest." Type in your name, then dial the conference phone number (1-888-619-1583) and enter participant code 491981.
Sensory gardens benefit children with (and without) disabilities
A story recently published by The Daily Beast website discussed the benefits experienced by special needs schoolchildren who spend time in "sensory gardens." Sensory gardens provide opportunities to see, smell, touch, listen to — and sometimes taste — plant life and garden fixtures, such as scented herbs, smooth river rocks or velvety lamb's ears.
Simply spending time in a plant-filled garden or greenhouse has been shown to help children with cognitive and physical disabilities. Communing with nature allows these children to develop better knowledge, skills, emotional regulation and self-reliance than they would in the sterile classroom environment. Even children without disabilities experience the same benefits.
