Members honored at Convention for outstanding service

The OAN honored the Oregon nursery industry's best and greatest servants at the annual President's Awards Banquet, held on the last night of the 2017 OAN Convention at Salishan Spa & Golf Resort in Gleneden Beach, Oregon.

The convention also featured the passing of the gavel from outgoing president Mark Bigej (Al's Garden & Home) to incoming president Josh Zielinski (Alpha Nursery Inc.).

Joining Zielinski and past president Bigej on the OAN Executive Committee for 2017–18 are president-elect Mike Hiller (Kraemer's Nursery), vice president Jim Simnitt (Simnitt Nursery), treasurer Kyle Fessler (St. Christopher Nursery LLC), secretary Josh Robinson (Robinson Nursery Inc.) and member at large Denece Messenger (Decorative Bark Products).

Members approve bylaw revisions at convention

Members approved new bylaws to guide the future governance of the Oregon Association of Nurseries during the annual meeting Saturday. The annual meeting was held as part of the OAN Convention in Gleneden Beach.

The most significant change is that board representation will now be based on industry segments rather than chapters or regions. The board for 2017–18, which was sworn in at the convention, will still be based on the old model of representation. Beginning in 2018–19, the new model will take effect.

Under the new model, the full board will include six officers and one at-large member of Executive Committee, as it does now, plus 10 industry representatives — six nursery growers (consisting of three container growers, two field grown/bare root growers and one field grown/B&B grower), two greenhouse operators, one retailer and one associate member. They will serve two-year terms, but during the first year of phase-in, some will serve for one year so that terms are staggered to help assure continuity.

Between now and next summer, president Josh Zielinski will appoint a Nominating Committee to nominate the industry representatives for the board. The Board of Directors will approve a slate of nominees and may add additional nominees to it. The slate of candidates then will be sent to the members for a vote via mail in ballot.

For more information on the approved bylaw proposal, log on to www.oan.org/bylaws.

Members enjoy the social side of convention

OAN members had a great time catching up with old friends, and making new connections, at the 2017 OAN Convention.

The opportunities to socialize began with Friday night's Hospitality Suites, which were sponsored by Crop Production Services, Leonard Adams Insurance Inc., and the tandem of Mark Bigej and Jeff Stone. They continued with the no-host reception held Saturday prior to the President's Awards Banquet.

We have photos from both events posted to Facebook. Please feel free to download, share and tag your friends.

The convention was made possible, and affordable, thanks to the generosity of convention sponsors and contributors.

Promote your retail business with a Retail Guide listing or ad

The Retail Nurseries & Garden Centers map and guide helps OAN retail members get out in front of the gardening public. All members who retail products to the public at a brick and mortar retail location, or via Internet or mail order, will be included if they have opted in. All members selling landscape services will also be included if they have opted in. The same information will be published online at www.PlantSomethingOregon.com where consumers can search and find them.

We will distribute 25,000 copies of the paper guide this year, beginning in February, at gardening events (including the spring and fall Portland Home & Garden Show), OAN member retail locations, travel kiosks, chambers of commerce and other locations. It's also distributed through a growing number of garden clubs and master gardener groups throughout the state.

If you have location changes or additions, changed the services you offer, or haven't been on the map before, please let us know no later than December 1. Either use the paper form that has been mailed to you, or contact Debbie Hopkins at dhopkins@oan.org or 503-582-2004. If no changes are needed, there is no need to return the form.

To increase your visibility with the public even more, cost effective advertising opportunities are available. For full details, please contact Blair Thompson (bthompson@oan.org), or download the flyer and insertion order. Ad space must be reserved by December 15, 2017.

Bill Goloski joins OAN staff as publications manager

Bill Goloski has been named as the new publications manager for the Oregon Association of Nurseries.

Goloski will serve as the lead designer and art director of Digger magazine and main writer of the weekly Member Update. He will also contribute to several other digital and printed articles, publications and projects for the association, including support for Farwest Show marketing.

"I'm looking forward to the variety of topics to be covered as the nursery industry has so many components to it," Goloski said.

He comes to the organization with more than 12 years of experience in the non-profit sector. He has previously served as a creative design manager in marketing and public affairs offices in the higher education sector, most recently for Oregon Institute of Technology in Wilsonville and Klamath Falls.

Goloski replaces Peter Szymczak, who left the OAN to accept a position as editor for Fresh Cup, a Portland-based trade publication for the coffee industry. He will report to Curt Kipp, OAN director of publications and communications and editor of Digger magazine.

"We are excited to have Bill on board," Kipp said. "We feel that he has strong visual design and production skills, as well as keen marketing insight, and will help us improve the quality of OAN's marketing and communication initiatives."

Those who have news items or events to submit for Member Update or the calendar and Northwest News features in Digger should submit them to Goloski at bgoloski@oan.org.
