State association honors its own with industry awards

The Oregon Association of Nurseries doled out several awards at its 2004 convention in Maui in September. The OAN Awards Committee accepts nominations from OAN members, deliberates and announces the winners each year at the trade group's annual get-together, which features educational sessions and entertainment. Below is a complete list of awards and winners. (Cities where award winners reside are listed in parentheses, if different from their business affiliation.)

2004 Award Winners

  • Distinguished Member of the Allied Trades Industry, given to a supplier of non-green goods who has shown above average support of the OAN, the industry and members -- Val Tancredi, Stettler Supply Co., Salem

  • Chapter of the Year, given to one of the OAN's nine chapters annually for service to OAN members, the industry and the state - Mt. Hood Chapter (encompasses Gresham and surrounding areas)

  • Retailer of the Year, given to an OAN member retail nurseryperson who shows exceptional merit promoting the retail nursery industry and who consistently promotes the OAN to the public - Mallory Gwynn, Al's Garden Center, Woodburn

  • Distinguished Education Award, given to an individual who has rendered exceptional service to the industry through education, extension or government agency - Robin Rosetta, OSU North Willamette Research & Extension Center, Aurora (Tigard resident)

  • Political Awareness Award, given to an individual who has shown exceptional political awareness in dedicated support of the nursery industry - Dan Wells, D. Wells Farms, Hubbard

  • Clayton Hannon Distinguished Service Award, given in recognition of a specific, notable service to the industry - Mark and Jolly Krautmann, Heritage Seedlings Inc., Salem

  • Honorary Life Membership, given in recognition of a lifetime of achievement and contribution to the benefit of the industry - Jack Bigej, Al's Garden Center, Woodburn

  • Young Nurseryperson of the Year, given to a nursery person under the age of 35 who has rendered outstanding service to the association - Erica Powell Zinn, Garland Nursery, Corvallis

  • Pat Richardson Memorial Award, established in memory of Pat Richardson, a nurseryman of great skill and imagination, who passed away in 1995 at the age of 53. Those who new him were impressed with his devotion to quality, integrity and creativity, which are the qualities of award recipients - Harley Higgins, Oregon Nursery Sales Inc., Aurora

  • Pacific Coast Nurseryman Outstanding Service Award, presented by Pacific Coast Nurseryman magazine to someone who has shown an exceptional degree of activity in OAN affairs; has an active, successful business; is willing to share knowledge; be active in related organizations and be of high personal character, integrity and reputation - Don Richards, Applied Horticultural Consulting Inc., Lake Oswego

  • President's Five Star Awards, presented by outgoing OAN President Mac McCarter to people who played a special role in helping him and the OAN reach important goals during his term as president - John Coulter, Fisher Farms LLC, Gaston (Hillsboro resident); Joe Kupillas, Countryside Nursery, Aurora (Wilsonville resident); Pat McCarter, wife of Mac (Salem resident); J. Frank Schmidt III, J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co., Boring; and the Oregon Department of Agriculture, based in Salem.

    The Oregon Association of Nurseries, based in Wilsonville, represents more than 1,600 wholesale growers, retailers, landscapers and suppliers. Oregon's ornamental horticulture industry is the state's largest agricultural commodity, with 2002 sales of $727 million.
