Oregon’s largest sector of agriculture announces endorsements for November election

WILSONVILLE – The Oregon Nurseries Political Action Committee (ONPAC), political arm of the Oregon Association of Nurseries, announced today its endorsements for the November election. Candidates were judged not on partisan alignments, but on their positions and records relative to nursery industry issues.

“ONPAC has taken the view that candidates should be endorsed based on issues, rather than partisanship.” said Dick Joyce, owner of Joyce Farms and Chairman of the Oregon Nurseries Political Action Committee. “These endorsements reflect non-partisan judgment about which candidates will best represent Oregon’s nursery and greenhouse businesses, many of which are family owned and operated.”

Consisting of primarily small farms, Oregon's ornamental horticulture industry is the state's largest agricultural commodity, with annual sales of more than $1 billion. “The nursery and greenhouse industry is a major contributor to the health of Oregon communities, the economy, and the environment,” said Jeff Stone, Director of Government Relations for the Oregon Association of Nurseries. “These candidates understand the need to support the long-term viability of these important businesses.”

ONPAC serves a critical role in shaping the association’s political agenda by supporting candidates that best serve the entire nursery and greenhouse membership. In many cases, candidates were invited for personal interviews and asked to explain their nursery industry support. Committee members focused on several key issues affecting the nursery and greenhouse industry, which included the following:

  • Workforce issues, such as immigration and card check;
  • Water issues such as supply, conservation, efficiency and water rights;
  • Environmental issues, such as pesticide use, climate change and sustainability;
  • Transportation and infrastructure issues; and
  • The general business atmosphere of the state.
