ONPAC Announces Endorsements

2014 State Legislative endorsements

The Oregon Nurseries' Political Action Committee (ONPAC) has issued several endorsements in the 2014 general election.

Candidate endorsements were based on interviews, letters from the candidates, candidate positions on key issues, and voting records. Numerous members of ONPAC, representing several industry sectors, participated in the interviews.

Questions for the candidates centered on several core issues, including the drivers card, water supply development, water quality regulations, support for Oregon State University Extension and the state natural resource agencies, tax policy, and support for transportation infrastructure.

"ONPAC has consistently taken the view that candidates should be endorsed based on issues, rather than a party affiliation," said Josh Zielinski, chairman of ONPAC. "We have a longstanding reputation for bipartisanship. We take ownership of issues affecting the nursery industry, and all of agriculture, and work collaboratively with other stakeholders to find the fairest and most effective solutions."

ONPAC recognizes that different association members may have differing political views. This year's endorsements include several Republicans and several Democrats, and that has also been the case in previous elections. ONPAC feels that all of the endorsed candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will work toward supporting the nursery and greenhouse industry in the State Capitol.

The resulting endorsements include 52 candidates for the Oregon Legislature, who include members of both parties.

In addition to 52 candidates for the Oregon Legislature, ONPAC endorses Gov. John Kitzhaber and U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader. ONPAC also recommends a Yes vote on Measure 88 (Oregon Driver's Card) and a No vote on Measure 92 (GMO labeling).

In a local Clackamas County measure, ONPAC urges a Yes vote on Ballot Measure 3-447. This $90 million bond measure would improve the educational facilities at Clackamas Community College. It would replace an expiring bond measure, and would not result in a net tax increase.
