U.S. Supreme Court to hear arguments over Arizona SB 1070

The constitutionality of state-based immigration enforcement will be tested April 25 when the U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments over Arizona Senate Bill 1070, which would make it a state crime to be an illegal immigrant. The law also requires police officers to check the legal status of anyone stopped or detained, if there is reasonable suspicion that the person might be illegal. Opponents challenged the law on the grounds that immigration and citizenship are properly federal matters. Critics have also said that the law amounts to thinly-veiled racial profiling. ImmigrationWorks USA will hold a nationwide update call at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24 to discuss the case. Those interested may call 800-868-1837 and enter passcode 8271336# to participate. If you plan to take part, you're asked to RSVP first to Valerie Woodall at
