Wanted: New plants for the New Varieties Showcase at Farwest

Do you have one or more exciting new plant introductions? The New Varieties Showcase at the Farwest Trade Show is the place to show them off to garden centers, growers, landscape designers and architects, trade publications and garden writers.

The showcase is now accepting submissions for the 2014 show. We're looking for plants with such characteristics as new colors, better manners, increasingly compact shape, extended seasons of interest, and improved landscape and production performance. To be eligible, all plant selections must be:

  • new to the market;
  • available for order from a Farwest Trade Show exhibitor; and
  • available fall 2014 or spring 2015.

The submission deadline is March 28, 2014.

OAN member briefing on ACA now available online

The Oregon Association of Nurseries recently hosted a series of four members-only briefings on the Affordable Care Act. An expert panel comprised of OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone, attorney Heidi Mason of the Jordan Ramis P.C. law firm, Randy Skinner of Leonard Adams Insurance, and Marisa O'Brien of Cover Oregon explained ACA requirements, and answered member questions. The Nov. 26 session at the OAN office was video recorded, and is now available online for viewing.

During 2014, OAN will be holding follow-up ACA briefings tailored to small and large employers, as well as more advanced briefings as the year goes on. In the meantime, here are some member resources:

Farm energy audits can help save energy costs

Farm energy audits can identify opportunities to reduce between 10–35 percent of total farm energy use. The audits, part of a program funded by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), are designed to help farmers take greater control of their energy use and increase their energy independence.

In Oregon, the deadline for the first round of applications is Jan. 17. (The second cutoff date is March 21.) Funding is limited for 2014, so applicants are encouraged to apply earlier than later. Farmers can visit their local NRCS service center to sign up, or call EnSave at 800-732-1399 to learn more.

Members urged to contact representatives re: immigration

Several Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives are circulating a letter asking their GOP colleagues to support immigration reform in 2014. Accordingly, AmericanHort and the OAN are urging nursery industry people to write their representatives, so they know the nursery industry has their backs. AmericanHort has provided a quick and easy online tool that automatically selects your correct representative based on zip code. You may use (or adapt) the sample letter, or write your own.
