Grower provides azaleas for opening day of Legislature

When Oregon legislators arrived at their desks in the House and Senate chambers on Monday, they were greeted by florist azaleas that were provided free of charge by Woodburn Nursery & Azaleas.

"These beautiful, Oregon-grown plants made a positive impression, as they always do," OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone said. "They reminded our legislators of the positive impact Oregon's nursery industry makes on the economy, as well as the natural and built environments."

Legislators are taking part in organizational meetings for the rest of January, and will begin their formal session on Monday, February 2. "As always, the OAN Government Relations Team will monitor all developments affecting the nursery industry and work hard on behalf of growers, retailers, suppliers, service providers and others affiliated with the green industry," Stone said.

U.S. House votes to overturn executive orders on immigration

The U.S. House of Representatives voted today (January 13, 2015) to allow the deportation of individuals who would otherwise be protected by recent executive branch policies.

Representatives voted 236-191 to overturn the president's executive order on immigration, issued in November. It directed federal officials to prioritize recent illegal immigrants, and those with criminal records, for enforcement, while allowing others to remain in the country. This vote was along party lines, with Republicans mostly for it, and Democrats against. Separately, they voted 218-209 to overturn the "Dreamer" provision that President Obama issued in 2012. This action protected against deportation those people who were brought to the United States when they were very young. Some Republicans crossed party lines to vote against this measure.

Sen. Merkley named as top Democrat on ag appropriations

Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley has been appointed as the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. According to the senator, this will allow him to advocate powerfully for Oregon's rural communities, agriculture research institutions, and ranching and farming families.

"Oregon's farmers, ranchers and rural communities deserve a strong voice in the Senate," said Merkley. "Oregon's rural communities are among the most beautiful and unique places in our nation, but too many families in rural Oregon are struggling with tough economies. I've been fighting to create good jobs, grow Oregon's small businesses and family farms, and ensure that every Oregon family has a shot at the American dream — and that's exactly what I'll continue doing with this new platform to work for Oregon's priorities."
