Stone to testify before Congress

OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone has been invited to testify next Tuesday, April 29, before the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture's Subcommittee on Horticulture, Research, Biotechnology and Foreign Agriculture. Stone will be speaking on behalf of the nursery industry regarding pollinator health and possible federal regulation of neonicotinoids.

Stone plans to highlight the collaborative and scientific approach that Oregon adopted in the wake of two highly publicized bee kills last year. "Oregon House Bill 4139 could have taken a negative approach, pitting interest group against interest group — but that did not happen," Stone will state in his prepared testimony. "Instead, stakeholders listened to one another and determined that a science-based approach to pollinator health would lead to a better solution."

Organizers expect about 20,000 attendees who are eager to learn more about Oregon's largest industry. Admission is $9 for adults, 12 and under get in free.

Your generous donation of plant materials helps raise money for the chapter's educational fund. Blooming plants are the best, although all plants are needed and welcome. Free workshop on "Streambank Erosion Control"

During the month of April, the Tualatin Soil and Water Conservation District has presented a series of free educational workshops geared for nursery owners. The final workshop will address "Streambank Erosion Control," a topic that should be of interest to nurseries with streamside property. For those who are losing ground to erosion, this is a good opportunity to learn why it happens, what the options are for dealing with it, what permits to be aware of, and how restoration programs may help in some cases.

The workshop will take place from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. this Saturday, April 26, at Clean Water Services in Hillsboro, Ore. Registration is required.
