Sharpton to give featured presentations at Farwest

The 2016 Farwest Show announced that garden center design and renovation expert Judy Sharpton will be a featured presenter at this year's show, set for August 25–27 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland.

Sharpton is an industry leader in garden retail with 35 years' experience in advertising and promotion and the owner of Growing Places Marketing. She is also being featured as one of the "Farwest Fanatics" in this year's Farwest ad campaign.

"Judy's participation in this year's show underscores our commitment to independent garden retail," OAN Director of Events Allan Niemi said. "Her expertise and experience has made a positive impact in this key segment for decades and we're thrilled to have her as part of our program."

USDA report: Snowpack melting at record speed

Low precipitation and high temperatures in the Pacific Northwest this spring have caused a record drop in western snowpack levels, according to a new report (PDF) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

In western states, snowmelt accounts for the majority of seasonal water supply. With peak streamflow arriving weeks earlier than normal this year, these signs may not bode well for future water availability.

Star Roses and Plants acquires Fall Creek's BrazelBerries

The purchase by Star Roses and Plants of Fall Creek's BrazelBerries branded collection of ornamental berry plants was announced last week.

"The BrazelBerries brand has grown tremendously from its inception a few years ago to a top retail berry brand in our industry," Steve Hutton, president of Star Roses and Plants, said. "It is exceptional in every respect, from the genetics to the brand design and execution to the first-rate marketing. We are fortunate to be able to add it to the ranks of our existing leading brands, Knock Out and Drift roses."

The sale agreement includes only the BrazelBerries line, not the company or its other assets.

More scientific data needed about neonicotinoids

Greenhouse Management magazine conducted a Q&A with Jill Calabro, AmericanHort's research and science programs director. She expressed concern about the nursery industry's ability to compile enough solid scientific data, which will be used to inform the EPA's risk assessments of neonicotinoids.

"It's very unclear what EPA will do with regard to ornamentals," Calabro said. "They haven't stated their plan of attack. So we are very concerned."

Earlier this year, EPA released a risk assessment of imidacloprid's impact on pollinators. This preliminary risk assessment fulfilled EPA's commitment to the national Pollinator Health Task Force. A full ecological and human health assessment will be released in December 2016.

New plant growth regulator for trees announced

Arborjet, a developer of plant health care solutions, announced the distribution of Shortstop® systemic plant growth regulator for trees.

According to the company's press release, Shortstop slows aboveground tree growth by 80 to 95 percent by inhibiting the production of gibberellic acid, resulting in less frequent pruning and maintenance. Rather than trees expending energy on top growth, Shortstop fosters increased root production, improving drought tolerance and reducing environmental stresses, such as the impact of construction damage.
