Article highlights nursery industry's recession recovery

The Great Recession of 2007–08 cut the nursery industry's revenues by almost 40 percent, but today sales of plant material have almost rebounded to pre-recession levels, according to a story published last week by the Portland Tribune.

OAN members Rod Park, owner of Park's Nursery in Gresham, and Dan Nelson, owner of Hans Nelson & Sons Nursery in Boring, are quoted in the article, as is OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone.

"I think over the last 18 to 24 months we've seen signs of improvement," Stone said. "I think this is the first year where it's really coming back. We're starting to see shortages of plant material in the marketplace."

The interviewees tempered their optimism by also voicing concern about labor shortages, rising labor and transportation costs, and uncertainty about the economy in general, serious factors which could inhibit future growth.

Transportation committee kicks off nine-city tour in Salem — tonight!

The Oregon Legislature's Joint Committee on Transportation Preservation and Modernization announced the schedule for a series of nine meetings to discuss state and local transportation needs with community leaders and the public across the state. The committee will hold its first meeting at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 25 at the Oregon State Capitol (900 Court St. NE, Salem).

The OAN encourages members to attend these meetings and make their voices heard. "Getting product to market is critical," OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone said. "Unfortunately, the state's outdated transportation infrastructure is hindering that process."

"Oregon's highways, bridges, ports, and rail connections need repair and modernization," committee co-chair Rep. Caddy McKeown (D-Coos Bay) said. "These meetings will give our committee members an opportunity to listen to Oregonians from across the state identify local transportation needs, and to build support for a comprehensive plan that will keep our economy moving and build a brighter future for Oregon."

Gross receipts tax would harm employment, according to state analysis

A proposed statewide gross receipts tax on Oregon businesses would raise $3 billion for the state annually, but would reduce employment growth by a net amount of 20,000 jobs over the next five years, according to an analysis (PDF) by the state Legislative Review Office.

The tax measure is currently known as Initiative Petition 28, but has yet to be assigned a formal ballot number. Backers have turned in more than 130,000 signatures and need only 88,184, meaning it is likely to be on the November ballot.

The measure would tax businesses based on their total sales, rather than just profits. As such, it would resemble a sales tax, but instead of showing up on retail receipts, it would be charged to the business. Analysts expect many businesses would pass the cost on to their customers in the form of higher prices.

Certain industries would be exempt, as would benefit corporations that agree to socially responsible practices, and businesses with annual sales of less than $25 million. Critics of the tax say that businesses selling high-volume, low-margin goods would be hit the worst, as would those selling products that pass through many different hands on their way to the end consumer.

Martha Stewart sources thousands of trees from JLPN

JLPN Inc., a wholesale grower of bare-root and container-grown trees, recently sent a substantial shipment of plant material to Bedford, New York, the site of Martha Stewart's farm.

The media mogul featured JLPN in several blog posts — Planting Many, Many Trees at the Farm and Potting Thousands of Trees. She also posted about the allee she planted utilizing Marley's Pink Styrax, a new pink weeping Japanese Snowbell introduced by JLPN.
