Gold, Coulter return from successful trip to D.C.

OAN President Matt Gold and Government Relations Committee Chairman John Coulter traveled to our nation's capital to meet with each of Oregon's members of Congress and discuss key issues for the nursery industry.

OAN's volunteer leaders presented their views and concerns regarding labor shortages, immigration, plant regulation, agricultural research, water supply regulations, pollinator health and the overall state of the industry. Members of Congress, along with key federal officials, were eager to hear the OAN's solution-oriented approaches to these issues.

"It was an incredible experience," Gold said. "I felt like we were listened to, and that our importance to the economy was recognized."

OAN efforts in the federal arena have paid dividends with the recent passage of the Farm Bill and the end of the USDA prenotification requirement, just for starters. Supporting and facilitating Gold and Coulter's efforts on the trip were attorney Steve Shropshire of Jordan Ramis PC, and OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone.

Stone appointed to Task Force on Pollinator Health

Gov. John Kitzhaber has appointed OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone to serve on the Task Force on Pollinator Health. The task force was created as a provision of the "Save Oregon's Pollinators Act" (House Bill 4139); its job is to draft and recommend legislation addressing the issue of pollinator health in time for the 2015 Oregon Legislature.

Agri-Business Council puts a face on Oregon agriculture

The Agri-Business Council of Oregon (ABC) is presently conducting a campaign called "I Am Agriculture," to help the public get to know the real people behind one of Oregon's largest industries. From June 2–15, there will be an ad on KATU, directing traffic to There, people will be able to see blog entries featuring different farming families. ABC would like to include nurseries in the campaign, and the OAN is helping to facilitate that. If you are interested in being featured, please contact Curt Kipp, OAN senior manager of publications, at for more information.

OAN a leader in YES on Oregon Safe Roads campaign

The Associated Press today published an article on the YES on Oregon Safe Roads campaign, which supports the four-year driver's card for qualified drivers who can prove they are Oregon residents. Voters will decide the issue in the November election. OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone was identified as one of the leaders of the effort. "We are looking at a pretty spendy campaign," he told the AP. In addition to nurseries, the measure is supported by hospitality groups, the faith and labor communities and members of law enforcement.

Stone urges all nurseries to support the measure, however they can. "The nation will be watching what Oregon does," he said. "The opponents are extreme and the result would harm the economy and our industry."

Willamette Chapter raises $4,700 at Ag Fest Plant Sale

OAN's Willamette Chapter just made a sizable deposit into its educational fund — and an investment in the green industry's future workforce.

The chapter raised $4,700 at its annual plant sale, which took place this past April 26–27 at the Oregon Ag Fest in Salem. The money will be used to grow and train a new generation of nursery workers.

Over the past few years, the chapter has made several contributions to the Horticultural Program at Chemeketa Community College (CCC). To date, the chapter has contributed $17,500, which has been used to purchase a pickup truck, various tools and planting supplies, new benches, irrigation and HVAC systems. [Read more]

Anderson Pots helps tree-growing project in Haiti

Three Angels Children's Relief and the Trees That Feed Foundation announced a generous donation from Anderson Pots, of Portland, Oregon, for its tree-growing project in Haiti.

Anderson Pots donated 10,000 2-3/8" by 5" tree-bands and deep propagation flats to begin producing more than 25,000 fruit trees. The trees will provide a sustainable food source and battle Haiti's rampant deforestation problem.

Residents of the impoverished island nation face a tremendous struggle to find cooking fuel for their daily meals. Most Haitians use a charcoaled wood product, which has claimed almost 99 percent of the island's forests. Deforestation has resulted in cooking fuel shortages, mudslides and other unstable earth conditions, and fewer fruit trees to supplement local diets.

"The goal is that Haiti will one day again return to the tropical paradise it once was where native trees produced both eatable fruit and reliable shelter against the various furies of nature," Eric Helgemo, president of Three Angels Children's Relief, said. "We sincerely thank Anderson Pots for joining us in our efforts."
