Smart sprayer demo set for August 14

A team of researchers is developing a Smart Sprayer, which will be demonstrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 at Hans Nelson and Sons Nursery, 31020 S.E. Waybill Road, Boring, Oregon. The sprayer, which is still being tested, uses a laser to detect the height, width and volume of the plants in a row. With this information, it can adjust the application of chemical sprays, thereby saving on input costs. The team includes researchers from Oregon State University, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, Ohio State University and the University of Tennessee. The demonstration is free and open to the public.

The Berry Family of Nurseries to close Oregon location

Texas-based grower The Berry Family of Nurseries announced that it will shut down its Cornelius, Oregon, location and lay off 100 people "on or about" Sept. 30, according to an article published by The Oregonian. The Cornelius site, known as BFN Operations Oregon, grows evergreen shrubs and trees and produces holiday greenery on 361 acres.

This is the second Cornelius-area nursery to lay off a significant number of workers this year. Glenn Walters Nursery cut 118 jobs after losing a major customer at the start of the year.

Donated plants needed for scholarship fundraiser plant sale

OAN's Clackamas Chapter is organizing its annual plant sale at the Clackamas County Fair. Great plants that represent the quality of our industry are needed. The quantity and variety does not matter; however, smaller plants with color have proven to be the easiest to sell.

The chapter sponsors two scholarships through the Oregon Nurseries Foundation: the Clackamas Chapter Award and the Clackamas Ed Wood Memorial Award, as well as the Small Grant Program Award, which funds requests for horticultural supplies from community colleges and high schools in our area.

The sale will take place at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds from Friday through Sunday, August 15–17. For more information, contact Tom Brewer at 503-686-8448 or, or Jim Simnitt at 503-266-9640.

Oregon announces 2014 Century Farm honorees

Oregon has added eight Century Farms and two Sesquicentennial Farms to its agricultural legacy, according to an announcement by the Oregon Agricultural Education Foundation. The farms and ranches will be honored at a ceremony on Aug. 23 at the Oregon State Fair in Salem.

Coordinated by the Oregon Agricultural Education Foundation, the designations honor farms and ranches that have been in continuous family ownership and operation for 100 and 150 years, respectively. The program is intended to honor the roots and legacy of Oregon agriculture. In addition to showing continuous family ownership, applicants must have a gross farm income of $1,000 or more in at least three of the past five years, and family members must live on or actively manage the operations.
