Sen. Merkley to host series of town halls August 10–13

In a series of town halls taking place this month, U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) will update constituents on his work in Washington, D.C. and answer their questions and invite their suggestions about how to tackle the challenges facing Oregon and America. Events will be held in Wilsonville on August 10, Joseph and Summerville on August 12, and Long Creek on August 13.

"There are huge issues facing Oregonians and the best way for me to effectively advocate for Oregon's families and businesses is by getting out on the road and holding a town hall in every county, every year to hear directly from Oregonians," Merkley said.

Sen. Merkley has a strong record of support for the green industry. Members are encouraged to attend and provide their thoughtful input on issues concerning the industry.

Oregon Garden Foundation hires new development director

The Oregon Garden Foundation announced the hiring of Mark Hunter as development director. Hunter will be responsible for shaping the comprehensive fund development program for the garden, including endowment, capital, annual giving and major gift campaigns. He has held key senior level positions with the Boy Scouts of America in Arizona and Washington, the United Way of Northern Arizona and the Arizona Community Foundation.

"I strongly support and believe in the notion that we are in the business of creating memories and through those memories, we are able to teach and provide experiences that will shape the future for our communities, families and especially kids," Hunter said. "What better place to do so than in a beautiful outdoor setting like The Oregon Garden. It is a destination, it is an experience and it is magical."

From farm to table — to home plate

Hot dogs, peanuts and cotton candy are foods most closely associated with a day at the ballpark. But a new menu of healthier, locally grown options are on offer in Boston and finding favor with fans.

A rooftop garden was planted on the roof of Fenway Park, home to the Boston Red Sox Major League Baseball team. A video segment recently broadcast on the NBC Nightly News tells how the garden is providing fresher, healthier food options to ballpark diners.

The popularity of these non-traditional ballpark offerings speaks to the sustained public interest in locally-sourced food, which also includes home-grown edibles.

Farwest Seminar Spotlight: Tips on motivating and selling to Millennials

As part of its retail education track, the 2015 Farwest Show will shed light on the economy's most influential generation — Gen Y (aka Millennials). Retail guru Anne M. Obarski will deliver a seminar titled "Gen Y: How to Motivate, Manage, and Sell to Them!" Garden centers need to better understand this market segment, which wields more spending power and stronger opinions at an earlier age.

In addition, Obarski will present a second seminar, "Customer Service Touchpoints: Make Every Connection Count!" She will point out where garden retail, and even producers, must focus to avoid any and all parts of your customer service falling through the cracks.

"Successful garden retail is an ongoing, dynamic effort," said Allan Niemi, director of events at the Oregon Association of Nurseries, producers of the Farwest Show. "The retail education at this year's show will give garden centers valuable tools and knowledge to keep pace with the ever-changing consumer, pointing the way to increased sales and profit."

Thanks to new state funds, OSU stepping up recruitment of several research positions

According to a report published by Capital Press, Oregon State University plans to recruit an entomologist who specializes in slug research as part of a broader hiring spree made possible with added money from state lawmakers. The Oregon legislature recently approved $14 million in additional funding for OSU's agricultural experiment stations, extension service and forest laboratory over the next two years.

The Oregon Association of Nurseries was a supporter of House Bill 5024, which not only increased extension funding but will also help pay for creation of a pollinator diagnostic center at OSU.

In a story published last week by, Langellatto gave background and perspective on the role individual gardeners can play in saving native pollinators.
