Yes on 88 Driver's Card campaign launches

The campaign to urge a Yes vote on Measure 88, the Oregon Driver's Card Bill, officially launched on Monday.

The Oregon Association of Nurseries is a key leader in the Safe Roads campaign, which urges Oregonians to support the limited-purpose, four-year card for individuals who can prove residency in Oregon, pass a driver's test, and meet other requirements. A yes vote will allow workers, seniors and others who need the driver's card to drive to work, school, medical appointments and the store.

This campaign is a critical issue for Oregon nurseries. At, you can help by volunteering, endorsing Measure 88, or donating securely online.

Free show admission for volunteering in the OAN Resource Center

Calling all volunteers! We need YOU to help staff the OAN Resource Center. Our large booth at the center of the Farwest Trade Show expo floor will be the central distribution point for copies of the new Nursery Guide, as well as promotion of the Plant Something™ gardening campaign and other programs offered by the association. We will also be handing out SAIF-produced safety videos, and encouraging people to download the Farwest Trade Show app for smartphones. Don't worry, we will coach you on how to do it!

We are looking to recruit at least three volunteers to staff the booth during show hours. Available shifts are as follows:

Thursday, August 21
11:45 a.m.–2 p.m.
1:45–4 p.m.
3:45–6 p.m.

Friday, August 22
11:45 a.m.–2 p.m.
1:45–4 p.m.
3:45–6 p.m.

Saturday, August 23
11:45 a.m.–2 p.m.
1:45 p.m.–4 p.m.

Please contact Ashley Wilsey ( or 503-682-5089) if you are able to volunteer for one or more of these shifts. It's a great way to meet members and show attendees. Plus, you will receive access to the show floor for FREE, and have the satisfaction of helping your trade association help the industry!

AmericanHort gives update on pollinator health

The recent Cultivate'14 trade show and event, held in mid-July in Columbus, Ohio, included an update on neonicotinoids from Joe Bischoff, director of regulatory and legislative affairs for AmericanHort, the national trade association. Bischoff said that people in the horticulture industry should be concerned about the evident decline in pollinator health, but emphasized that there are a variety of possible contributing causes. Bischoff's entire, 42-minute presentation can be viewed on YouTube; the accompanying PowerPoint presentation can be downloaded here.

The Oregon Association of Nurseries continues to be involved in the issue, through executive director Jeff Stone's participation in the governor's Pollinator Health Task Force. The group has met three times and is making progress towards final recommendations that are due in October.

Understanding ATV stability

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have become useful tools to increase productivity on Oregon farms, but they are powerful and potentially dangerous vehicles. Learn about active riding techniques to improve stability and other practical safety tips to reduce injuries by downloading these safety guides: English (PDF) | Spanish (PDF).

ATV safety videos can be ordered online — use order code AGRI-09 for Understanding ATV Stability — or, while supplies last, DVDs will also be available at the OAN Resource Center at the Farwest Trade Show. These instructional safety materials are provided by SAIF Corporation, Oregon's not-for-profit, state-chartered workers' compensation insurance company.

Trees save more than 850 lives a year, study says

According to a study recently published in Environmental Protection magazine, trees saved more than 850 lives in 2010 and prevented more than 670,000 cases of acute respiratory syndrome in the same year by removing air pollutants. Although trees are noted in the study to remove less than 1 percent of air pollution, that is enough to realize these health benefits. The study values the human health costs saved at $6.8 billion.

Deliver plant donations this week for scholarship fundraiser

Plant donations can be dropped off this week for the Clackamas Chapter's upcoming annual plant sale at the Clackamas County Fair. Great plants that represent the quality of our industry are needed. The quantity and variety does not matter; however, smaller plants with color have proven easiest to sell.

Delivery of plant materials can be made this week at any of these three locations:

Simnitt Nursery, 138 NE 22nd Ave., Canby, OR 97013, 503-266-9640
Willamette Nurseries, 25571 S Barlow Rd., Canby, OR 97013, 503-263-6405
Champoeg Horticulture, 20177 Case Rd. NE, Aurora, OR 97002, 503-678-6031

The sale will take place at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds from Friday through Sunday, August 15–17. For more information, contact Tom Brewer at 503-686-8448 or, or Jim Simnitt at 503-266-9640.

Important procedures for filing crop insurance claims

Producers affected by recent fires and weather-related crop damage in the Pacific Northwest should be aware of important procedures for claiming losses under the federal crop insurance program, according to a press release sent by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Risk Management Agency.

In general, producers must give notice within 72 hours of the initial discovery of damage or loss of production of a planted crop, and not later than 15 days after the end of the insurance period. Certain provisions and timelines apply to crops insured with revenue protection. Producers should refer to their crop insurance policies for complete details on providing notice of damage or loss.
